As part of our celebration of To See an Owl by Matthew Cordell, individual schools are invited to host their own student poetry contest inspired by the book.
Each school will organize and run its own contest.
Schools may choose how entries are submitted and judged.
One student winner will be selected by each participating school. Please notify the DLMC of your student winner by October 20, 2025.
Possible writing prompt: Just like the girl in the story searches for an owl, write a poem about searching-whether it's for a creature, a moment, a feeling, or something magical in the natural world
A hidden animal, a special moment that took time to find, something you only see when you slow down and pay attention
The selected student winner will receive an autographed copy of To See an Owl as a prize.
Participation is optional and organized at the school level. Please contact your school librarian for more details.
