This is our cozy little blog corner for monthly classroom updates, where I’ll share what we’ve been learning, fun activities we’ve done, and all the amazing things your kids are accomplishing!
(No student faces will be shared here. Those photos will be posted only in our private Class Dojo group.)
How is September already almost over?! It feels like we were just learning where everything goes in our classroom, and now these kids are walking in each morning like they own the place. 😂
September was a busy one! We finished our first units, tackled our first Benchmark assessments, started multiplication, welcomed Baxter into several homes, kicked off Guess Who Student of the Week, celebrated a birthday, practiced lots of safety drills, met for conferences, and somehow squeezed plenty of learning and fun in between.
August was about figuring everything out. September was when we really started finding our groove! 💛
We started September by wrapping up Unit 1: Animal Characteristics. Our reading lessons had us doing a little bit of everything: reading fluently, retelling and paraphrasing, finding key ideas and details, exploring cause and effect, figuring out an author’s purpose, comparing texts, reading poetry, and using context clues to tackle unfamiliar words.
All that hard work led to our first ELA Benchmark Assessment! Students practiced with Brrrr! It’s Cold! and Safe in the Snow before showing what they knew on the assessment.
Then it was goodbye, animals and hello, characters!
We jumped into Unit 2: Characters Shape Their Stories, where we are becoming character detectives. We are looking closely at what characters say, do, think, and feel and using evidence from the text to describe them. We have also been exploring setting, plot, mental images, context clues, affixes, figurative language, idioms, and comparing characters across stories.
One thing I especially love seeing is how much better the kids are getting at explaining their thinking. We are moving beyond “I think this is the answer” and toward “I think this because the text says…” That is a BIG step!
Our writers have been busy, too!
We began the month with personal narratives, writing about experiences and events from our own lives and perspectives.
Students also completed their first Benchmark writing assessment, where they compared and contrasted two informational texts. That required them to read closely, organize their thinking, and use evidence from what they read.
Now our reading and writing are working together as we learn to compare and contrast characters. Students are going back into stories to hunt for text evidence and word clues that help them explain who a character is and how that character compares to another.
And, of course, our trusty Think SRSD strategies are still along for the ride, helping us slow down, organize our thoughts, and turn all those ideas floating around in our brains into writing that makes sense! 🧠✏️
This was a BIG transition month for our mathematicians!
We officially wrapped up Unit 1: Three-Digit Numbers, where we worked on place value, addition, and subtraction. Students even completed their first math unit test!
Then came a word that tends to make third graders feel very grown-up...
MULTIPLICATION!
Before we worry about memorizing facts, we are making sure students understand what multiplication actually means. We have been working with equal groups and beginning to multiply by 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10.
Right now, understanding the why is much more important than racing to memorize the answers. We are building that foundation first and there is plenty more multiplication fun headed our way!
One of the best parts of our week is getting to bounce around to so many different subjects during our Spotlight Rotations.
Our September learning included:
Science: Inherited traits, animal adaptations, and animal social/group behaviors
Grammar: Syllables, inflectional endings, and parts of speech
SEL: Better Together, self-reflection, and repairing relationships
Cursive: Lots of new lowercase letters and practice
Phonics: Long o, long u, and long e spelling patterns
Library: Our favorite Tuesday tradition!
There is never a dull moment around here!
September brought several classroom firsts, including our first major ELA Benchmark and math unit assessments.
Assessments help me see what students have mastered, what might need another look, and where we should head next. We are also learning that a test isn't something to be scared of, it is simply a chance to show what we know!
Our weekly spelling routine is also officially underway. Students have been practicing spelling patterns and high-frequency words throughout the week and working to carry those skills into their everyday reading and writing.
We are also seeing lots of growth in independence. Remembering planners, bringing homework back, keeping track of materials, knowing what needs to go home and what needs to come back... there is a LOT to remember when you are a third grader!
Every little step toward doing those things independently is worth celebrating.
Apparently, Baxter has a much more exciting social calendar than the rest of us. 😂
This month he packed his bags and headed home with Ella, Nash, and Marylee! Each student got a whole week with Baxter before coming back on Friday to tell us all about their adventures together.
The kids absolutely love finding out who Baxter gets to visit next, and hearing about his adventures has quickly become one of our favorite Friday traditions. 💛
His September adventures aren't over quite yet. Elijah is up next!
We also kicked off our Guess Who Student of the Week!
Each week, we get clues from one student's Guess Who poster and try to solve the mystery of which classmate it could be.
The mystery student isn't revealed until Friday, so we get to spend the week making guesses, changing our minds, and learning fun things about one another along the way.
It has been such a simple and FUN way to celebrate each child and continue getting to know our classroom family.
Academics definitely weren't the only thing happening around here!
September also brought Patriot Day, several important school safety drills, our rotating Specials classes, Ellie's birthday, the official first day of fall, delayed-start Fridays, and plenty of other little moments that made the month memorable.
We also had our first parent-teacher conferences!
Thank you to everyone who came in to meet with me. I loved having the chance to sit down together, talk about your child, celebrate their strengths and growth, and look ahead at goals for the rest of the year. Those conversations are so valuable, and I truly appreciate the partnership between home and school.
And September isn't quite finished yet...
Donuts with Dudes is September 30! 🍩
Because apparently the only proper way to say goodbye to September is with donuts. I fully support this.
Somehow, we are already two months into third grade.
The difference between those first few days in August and now is pretty amazing. Routines that once needed ten reminders are becoming automatic (okay... some of them 😂). Friendships are growing. Hands are going up more confidently. Students are taking more responsibility for themselves and their learning. Our classroom is really beginning to feel like our little community.
There is still SO much ahead of us, but September gave us a lot to celebrate.
Next stop: October! 🎃
Bring on more multiplication, more books, more writing, more science, more Baxter adventures, more learning, and, I'm sure, plenty more third-grade silliness.

¡¿Cómo es posible que septiembre ya esté a punto de terminar?! Parece que apenas ayer estábamos aprendiendo dónde iba cada cosa en nuestro salón, ¡y ahora estos niños entran cada mañana como si fueran los dueños del lugar! 😂
¡Septiembre fue un mes muy ocupado! Terminamos nuestras primeras unidades, enfrentamos nuestras primeras evaluaciones Benchmark, comenzamos a aprender multiplicación, recibimos a Baxter en varios hogares, iniciamos nuestro “Adivina Quién” – Estudiante de la Semana, celebramos un cumpleaños, practicamos varios simulacros de seguridad, nos reunimos para las conferencias y, de alguna manera, ¡también encontramos tiempo para muchísimo aprendizaje y diversión!
Agosto fue el mes de aprender cómo funcionaba todo. ¡En septiembre fue cuando realmente comenzamos a encontrar nuestro ritmo! 💛
Comenzamos septiembre terminando la Unidad 1: Características de los Animales. En nuestras lecciones de lectura hicimos un poquito de todo: leer con fluidez, volver a contar y parafrasear, encontrar ideas y detalles clave, explorar causa y efecto, identificar el propósito del autor, comparar textos, leer poesía y utilizar pistas de contexto para comprender palabras desconocidas.
¡Todo ese trabajo nos llevó a nuestra primera Evaluación Benchmark de ELA! Los estudiantes practicaron con Brrrr! It’s Cold! y Safe in the Snow antes de demostrar todo lo que habían aprendido en la evaluación.
Después, ¡nos despedimos de los animales y les dimos la bienvenida a los personajes!
Comenzamos la Unidad 2: Los Personajes Dan Forma a Sus Historias, donde nos estamos convirtiendo en detectives de personajes. Observamos cuidadosamente lo que los personajes dicen, hacen, piensan y sienten, y utilizamos evidencia del texto para describirlos. También hemos estado explorando el escenario, la trama, imágenes mentales, pistas de contexto, afijos, lenguaje figurado, expresiones idiomáticas y comparando personajes de diferentes historias.
Algo que me encanta ver es cuánto están mejorando los niños al explicar su razonamiento. Estamos pasando de “Creo que esta es la respuesta” a “Creo esto porque el texto dice…”. ¡Ese es un GRAN paso!
¡Nuestros escritores también han estado muy ocupados!
Comenzamos el mes con narrativas personales, escribiendo sobre experiencias y acontecimientos de nuestras propias vidas y desde nuestra propia perspectiva.
Los estudiantes también completaron su primera evaluación Benchmark de escritura, en la que compararon y contrastaron dos textos informativos. Para hacerlo, tuvieron que leer cuidadosamente, organizar sus ideas y utilizar evidencia de los textos.
Ahora nuestra lectura y escritura están trabajando juntas mientras aprendemos a comparar y contrastar personajes. Los estudiantes están regresando a las historias para buscar evidencia en el texto y pistas en las palabras que les ayuden a explicar cómo es un personaje y cómo se compara con otro.
Y, por supuesto, nuestras confiables estrategias Think SRSD siguen acompañándonos, ayudándonos a ir más despacio, organizar nuestros pensamientos y convertir todas esas ideas que flotan en nuestro cerebro en una escritura que tenga sentido.
¡Este fue un mes de GRANDES cambios para nuestros matemáticos!
Terminamos oficialmente la Unidad 1: Números de Tres Dígitos, donde trabajamos con valor posicional, suma y resta. ¡Los estudiantes incluso completaron su primer examen de unidad de matemáticas!
Y después llegó una palabra que suele hacer que los estudiantes de tercer grado se sientan muy grandes...
¡MULTIPLICACIÓN! ✖️
Antes de preocuparnos por memorizar las tablas, queremos asegurarnos de que los estudiantes comprendan lo que realmente significa multiplicar. Hemos estado trabajando con grupos iguales y comenzando a multiplicar por 0, 1, 2, 5 y 10.
Por ahora, comprender el porqué es mucho más importante que apresurarnos a memorizar respuestas. Primero estamos construyendo una base sólida, ¡y todavía nos espera mucha más diversión con la multiplicación!
Una de las mejores partes de nuestra semana es poder explorar tantas materias diferentes durante nuestras Rotaciones de Spotlight.
Nuestro aprendizaje de septiembre incluyó:
Ciencias: Rasgos heredados, adaptaciones de los animales y comportamientos sociales y grupales de los animales
Gramática: Sílabas, terminaciones flexivas y partes de la oración
SEL (Aprendizaje Socioemocional): Better Together, autorreflexión y cómo reparar relaciones
Cursiva: Muchas letras minúsculas nuevas y práctica
Fonética: Patrones ortográficos de las vocales largas o, u y e en inglés
Biblioteca: ¡Nuestra tradición favorita de los martes!
¡Nunca hay un momento aburrido por aquí!
Septiembre trajo varias primeras experiencias para nuestra clase, incluyendo nuestras primeras evaluaciones importantes de ELA Benchmark y de la unidad de matemáticas.
Las evaluaciones me ayudan a ver lo que los estudiantes ya dominan, qué cosas necesitan un poquito más de práctica y hacia dónde debemos dirigirnos después. También estamos aprendiendo que un examen no es algo a lo que debemos tener miedo; ¡simplemente es una oportunidad para demostrar lo que sabemos!
Nuestra rutina semanal de ortografía también ya está oficialmente en marcha. Los estudiantes han estado practicando patrones ortográficos y palabras de uso frecuente durante toda la semana, mientras trabajan para aplicar esas habilidades en su lectura y escritura diaria.
También estamos viendo muchísimo crecimiento en la independencia. Recordar las agendas, regresar la tarea, mantener organizados los materiales, saber qué necesita ir a casa y qué necesita regresar a la escuela... ¡hay MUCHÍSIMO que recordar cuando eres estudiante de tercer grado!
Cada pequeño paso hacia hacer estas cosas de manera independiente merece celebrarse.
Aparentemente, Baxter tiene una vida social mucho más emocionante que el resto de nosotros. 😂
¡Este mes hizo sus maletas y se fue a casa con Ella, Nash y Marylee! Cada estudiante tuvo una semana completa con Baxter antes de regresar el viernes para contarnos todas las aventuras que vivieron juntos.
A los niños les encanta descubrir a quién visitará Baxter después, y escuchar sobre sus aventuras se ha convertido rápidamente en una de nuestras tradiciones favoritas de los viernes. 💛
Y sus aventuras de septiembre todavía no han terminado. ¡Elijah es el siguiente!
¡También comenzamos nuestro “Adivina Quién” – Estudiante de la Semana!
Cada semana recibimos pistas del póster Guess Who de un estudiante e intentamos resolver el misterio de qué compañero podría ser.
El estudiante misterioso no se revela hasta el viernes, así que podemos pasar toda la semana haciendo predicciones, cambiando de opinión y aprendiendo cosas divertidas sobre nuestros compañeros en el proceso.
¡Ha sido una manera sencilla y MUY divertida de celebrar a cada niño y continuar conociendo mejor a nuestra familia del salón!
¡Definitivamente, lo académico no fue lo único que ocurrió por aquí!
Septiembre también nos trajo el Día de los Patriotas, varios simulacros importantes de seguridad escolar, nuestras clases especiales, el cumpleaños de Ellie, el primer día oficial de otoño, nuestros viernes de inicio retrasado y muchos otros pequeños momentos que hicieron que este mes fuera especial.
¡También tuvimos nuestras primeras conferencias de padres y maestros!
Muchas gracias a todos los que vinieron a reunirse conmigo. Me encantó tener la oportunidad de sentarnos juntos, hablar sobre su hijo(a), celebrar sus fortalezas y crecimiento, y pensar en las metas para el resto del año. Esas conversaciones son muy valiosas, y realmente agradezco la colaboración entre la escuela y el hogar.
Y septiembre todavía no ha terminado por completo...

Porque aparentemente la única manera correcta de despedir septiembre es con donas. Estoy completamente de acuerdo.
De alguna manera, ya llevamos dos meses de tercero grado.
La diferencia entre esos primeros días de agosto y ahora es increíble. Las rutinas que antes necesitaban diez recordatorios están comenzando a ser automáticas (bueno... algunas 😂). Las amistades están creciendo. Las manos se levantan con más confianza. Los estudiantes están asumiendo más responsabilidad por sí mismos y por su aprendizaje. Nuestro salón realmente está comenzando a sentirse como nuestra pequeña comunidad.
Todavía nos queda MUCHO por delante, pero septiembre nos dio muchísimas razones para celebrar.

What a busy and exciting August it has been! From Meet the Teacher and our very first day together to pep rallies, library visits, new classroom routines, and lots of learning, we have packed so much into these first few weeks of school.
The beginning of the year is always about more than academics. We have been learning how to be a classroom family by practicing routines, building independence, making new friends, learning how to work together, and discovering what it means to be a kind and responsible member of our class. I am already so proud of the progress we have made!
We kicked off August with Meet the Teacher on August 10, followed by our first day of school on August 12! Those first few days were all about getting comfortable in our new classroom and learning what our days together will look like.
Students practiced classroom procedures, learned expectations, explored our materials, and began getting to know their classmates. We also introduced and reviewed our Think SRSD writing strategies and started building the routines that will help us become confident, independent learners throughout the year.
Our Spotlight Rotations gave us even more opportunities to learn and grow through phonics (plural nouns and short vowels), grammar (capitalization), science (Life Cycles), social-emotional learning (showing kindness and being an upstander vs. a bystander, cursive (j and f), and library time (checking out our first books for the year).
We began Reading/ELA with our Foundations and Routines, practicing important habits such as active listening, thinking with a partner, learning new vocabulary, and using classroom anchor charts.
Then we jumped into Unit 1: Animal Characteristics! Students have been working on skills including fluency, retelling, text features, main idea and details, cause and effect, context clues, and asking questions while reading. We explored informational texts such as A Day in the Life of a Chicken Wrangler and Animal Hide and Seek, Camouflage Q and A, along with some fiction through Alice in Wonderland.
In writing, students completed the beginning-of-the-year writing assessment and started working with informative writing, using evidence to support a central idea and becoming vocabulary detectives to prove we can learn new words in text.
For phonics, we reviewed plural nouns, vowels and then moved into short-vowel sounds. These foundational skills will continue to support stronger reading and spelling all year long!
We started the year by reviewing place value and rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred. From there, we began our first math unit: Three-Digit Numbers, which focuses on place value, addition, and subtraction.
By the end of August, students had started into adding three-digit numbers. I love seeing students begin to explain their mathematical thinking and use place-value strategies instead of simply looking for an answer.
Families also began receiving Thursday Folders and our math Family Letters when we start a new lesson. These are a great way to see exactly what your child is learning. Remember that the family activity on the back is completely optional, but students may return it for extra Dojo Points!
Our Spotlight Rotations have already taken us into several different areas of learning!
Students have worked on capitalization and nouns in grammar, explored life cycles in science, practiced cursive letters, and participated in social-emotional lessons about kindness, anti-bullying, and standing up for others.
We also enjoyed our trips to the library and began rotating through our Specials classes, including Music, PE, Science, Innovation Lab, and Art.
Our first spelling list arrived during the week of August 24, which also meant our first spelling test! Students practiced both spelling words and high-frequency words throughout the week.
Our homework routine is designed to be short, useful, and family-friendly. Monday through Thursday, students typically have a brief spelling activity and math review that should take about 10 minutes or less.
Homework should never create stress or take away from family time. If it is taking much longer than expected, please stop for the evening and let me know. Partially completed work still receives homework points.
And one of my favorite rules: no homework on weekends, breaks, or holidays—ever! My goal is meaningful practice, not busy work.
August gave us plenty of special moments outside of our regular lessons, too! We celebrated the start of school, welcomed our kindergarten families for the Boo Hoo Breakfast, practiced safety during our fire drill, enjoyed our Welcome Pep Rally, began i-Ready testing, completed fun classroom activities like our Name Jar Questions and Guess Who posters, and celebrated Zoe’s birthday!
We also experienced our first delayed-start Fridays, which gave everyone a little extra time before beginning our school day.
Thank you for everything you have done to help make the beginning of our school year successful, from completing forms and signing planners to helping students remember assignments, supplies, and routines.
These first few weeks are a big adjustment for children, and I am so excited about the classroom community we are building together. We have already learned a lot, laughed a lot, and grown a lot; August was only the beginning!

¡Qué mes de agosto tan ocupado y emocionante hemos tenido! Desde Conoce a la Maestra y nuestro primer día juntos hasta asambleas, visitas a la biblioteca, nuevas rutinas del salón y muchísimo aprendizaje, ¡hemos hecho tantas cosas durante estas primeras semanas de clases!
El comienzo del año escolar siempre se trata de mucho más que lo académico. Hemos estado aprendiendo a ser una familia dentro del salón al practicar rutinas, desarrollar independencia, hacer nuevos amigos, aprender a trabajar juntos y descubrir lo que significa ser un miembro amable y responsable de nuestra clase. ¡Ya estoy muy orgullosa de todo el progreso que hemos logrado!
Comenzamos agosto con Conoce a la Maestra el 10 de agosto, seguido de nuestro primer día de clases el 12 de agosto. Esos primeros días se enfocaron en sentirnos cómodos en nuestro nuevo salón y aprender cómo serán nuestros días juntos.
Los estudiantes practicaron los procedimientos del salón, aprendieron las expectativas, exploraron nuestros materiales y comenzaron a conocer a sus compañeros. También presentamos y repasamos nuestras estrategias de escritura Think SRSD y comenzamos a establecer las rutinas que nos ayudarán a convertirnos en estudiantes seguros e independientes durante todo el año.
Nuestras rotaciones de Spotlight nos dieron aún más oportunidades para aprender y crecer por medio de fonética (sustantivos plurales y vocales cortas), gramática (uso de mayúsculas), ciencias (ciclos de vida), aprendizaje socioemocional (mostrar amabilidad y aprender a intervenir para ayudar a los demás en lugar de ser solo un observador), escritura cursiva (j y f) y tiempo en la biblioteca (¡sacando nuestros primeros libros del año!).
Comenzamos Lectura/ELA con nuestros Fundamentos y Rutinas, practicando hábitos importantes como escuchar activamente, pensar y conversar con un compañero, aprender vocabulario nuevo y utilizar las tablas de referencia del salón.
Después comenzamos nuestra Unidad 1: ¡Características de los Animales! Los estudiantes han estado trabajando en destrezas que incluyen fluidez, volver a contar un texto, características del texto, idea principal y detalles, causa y efecto, pistas de contexto y hacer preguntas mientras leen. Exploramos textos informativos como A Day in the Life of a Chicken Wrangler y Animal Hide and Seek, Camouflage Q and A, además de leer ficción con Alice in Wonderland.
En escritura, los estudiantes completaron la evaluación de escritura de principio de año y comenzaron a trabajar con la escritura informativa, utilizando evidencia para apoyar una idea central. Al finalizar agosto, los estudiantes habían comenzado a trabajar en la suma de números de tres dígitos. Me encanta ver cómo los estudiantes comienzan a explicar su razonamiento matemático y a utilizar estrategias de valor posicional en lugar de simplemente buscar una respuesta.
Las familias también comenzaron a recibir las Carpetas de los Jueves (Thursday Folders) y nuestras Cartas para la Familia (Family Letters) de matemáticas cuando comenzamos una nueva lección. Estas son una excelente manera de ver exactamente lo que su hijo(a) está aprendiendo. Recuerden que la actividad familiar que aparece al reverso es completamente opcional, pero los estudiantes pueden entregarla para recibir puntos adicionales de Dojo.
¡Nuestras rotaciones de Spotlight ya nos han llevado a varias áreas diferentes de aprendizaje!
Los estudiantes han trabajado en el uso de mayúsculas y los sustantivos en gramática, explorado los ciclos de vida en ciencias, practicado letras cursivas y participado en lecciones socioemocionales sobre la amabilidad, la prevención del acoso escolar y cómo defender y apoyar a los demás.
También disfrutamos nuestras visitas a la biblioteca y comenzamos nuestras rotaciones de clases especiales, incluyendo Música, Educación Física (PE), Ciencias, Innovation Lab y Arte.
Nuestra primera lista de palabras de ortografía llegó durante la semana del 24 de agosto, ¡lo que también significó nuestro primer examen de ortografía! Los estudiantes practicaron tanto las palabras de ortografía como las palabras de uso frecuente durante toda la semana.
Nuestra rutina de tarea está diseñada para ser corta, útil y apropiada para las familias. De lunes a jueves, los estudiantes normalmente tienen una breve actividad de ortografía y un repaso de matemáticas que, en conjunto, deben tomar aproximadamente 10 minutos o menos.
La tarea nunca debe causar estrés ni quitar tiempo importante en familia. Si está tomando mucho más tiempo de lo esperado, por favor deténganse por esa noche y háganmelo saber. Los trabajos parcialmente completados aún reciben puntos de tarea.
Y una de mis reglas favoritas: ¡nunca hay tarea los fines de semana, durante los descansos escolares ni en días festivos! Mi objetivo es proporcionar práctica significativa, no simplemente trabajo para mantenerlos ocupados.
¡Agosto también nos regaló muchos momentos especiales fuera de nuestras lecciones regulares! Celebramos el comienzo de clases, recibimos a nuestras familias de Kindergarten para el Boo Hoo Breakfast, practicamos la seguridad durante nuestro simulacro de incendio, disfrutamos nuestro Welcome Pep Rally, comenzamos las evaluaciones de i-Ready, completamos actividades divertidas en el salón como nuestras preguntas de Name Jar y los pósteres de Guess Who, ¡y celebramos el cumpleaños de Zoe!
También tuvimos nuestros primeros viernes de inicio retrasado, que les dieron a todos un poquito de tiempo adicional antes de comenzar nuestro día escolar.
Gracias por todo lo que han hecho para ayudarnos a comenzar nuestro año escolar con éxito, desde completar formularios y firmar las agendas hasta ayudar a los estudiantes a recordar sus tareas, materiales y rutinas.
Estas primeras semanas representan una gran adaptación para los niños, y estoy muy emocionada por la comunidad que estamos construyendo juntos en nuestro salón. Ya hemos aprendido mucho, reído mucho y crecido mucho; ¡agosto fue solo el comienzo!
