Shane Donovan is the coordinator of the IB Career Program and Career and Technical Education at DCI. He helps coach teachers in the career-tech education academies and manages budgets, outreach, and work-based learning events for our four career-tech pathways, including Health Sciences. He has been in education since 2009, and he has been at DCI since 2016. He has taught biology, chemistry, physics, math, computer science, and robotics, and he won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science teaching in 2021. He's one of the Health Science Academy's biggest fans!
Dan Herring is the Sports Medicine & Performance Coordinator at DCI and is a certified athletic trainer and corrective exercise specialist. Prior to DCI, Dan worked with NCAA Division I teams at Georgetown University, Syracuse University, and at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also received his Masters of Science in Sports Medicine. Dan enjoys helping others accomplish their physical goals in a healthy way and loves making a positive impact on his patients and students. After working as an athletic trainer at the college level for 7 years, Dan is in his second year at DCI, and his first year teaching Sports Medicine in the Health Science Academy!
Jake McCormick, a dedicated educator at DC International School, brings a rich background in healthcare and a deep passion for teaching to his role. A Maryland native, Jake graduated with a Biology degree from James Madison University in 2016 and furthered his education in Biotechnology at Johns Hopkins University, graduating in 2019. His hands-on experience in the medical field includes vital roles as an EMT and Medical Scribe at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, and later at Sibley Memorial Hospital. Since joining DCI in 2022, Jake has been enthusiastically sharing his real-world healthcare experiences with students as HOSA Advisor and in courses like Principles of Health Science, Chemistry, Sports Exercise Health Science, and Medical Anatomy and Physiology. Outside the classroom, he enjoys board games, birding, and spending time with his partner and two cats in NYC.
Paul is currently in his first year at the D.C International School after spending the past 9 years in the professional, collegiate, high school and private training sectors. He has worked with hundreds of athletes from various aspects of sport including the 2014-15 Washington Wizards, Georgetown University Women’s Lacrosse & Baseball and olympic level and tactical athletes at the headquarters of the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
He has also received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Pittsburgh (‘12), his masters of science degree from George Washington University (‘15) and his doctorate in sport physiology & performance from East Tennessee State University (‘20). His dissertation focused on block periodization and the adaptations of strength training for trained and untrained athletes.
He is currently teaching our Sport, Exercise & Health Science II class for seniors. After school, he is running the DCI weight room and working with both in-season teams and off-season teams in an effort to help decrease the risk of injury and to improve the athletic performance of our student athletes.
He currently lives in Alexandria, Va with his wife.
Since joining DCI in 2019, Shreyas Patel has consistently proven his dedication as a faculty member, seamlessly blending experience with a fervent commitment to cultivating an enriching learning environment. Holding a BS in Biology with Minors in Chemistry, Communications, and Music, Shreyas brings a diverse educational background to his role. He furthered his academic pursuits with a Master's in Medicine, a Masters in the Art of Teaching, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, solidifying his expertise in both the sciences and educational methodologies.
Prior to his tenure at DCI, Shreyas garnered valuable teaching experience at Centennial High School, Franklin, TN, and Hillsboro IB World School, Nashville, TN. His journey in education has been multifaceted, encompassing roles such as teacher, instructional coach, Instructional Technology coach, Mentor, Assistant Principal, Academy Coordinator, and subject Coordinator.
Shreyas' teaching philosophy emphasizes the integration of theory with real-world applications, fostering critical thinking, encouraging curiosity, and instilling a genuine love for learning. This approach is particularly evident in the creation of conducive learning environments tailored to students pursuing health-related studies.
Working alongside the AoHS team, Shreyas remains actively engaged in the ongoing transformation of the Academy of Health Science, aiming to shape it into a dynamic hub for emerging leaders and innovative thinkers.
In addition to his academic responsibilities, Shreyas takes on the role of HOSA advisor for the DCI chapter and serves as the esteemed DC HOSA State Advisor. This involvement underscores his dedication to fostering leadership and excellence within the realm of health-related studies.
Beyond the academic sphere, Shreyas leads a multifaceted life as a professional classical singer. His talent is showcased through performances at renowned venues such as the National Shrine and National Cathedral, as well as collaborations with various professional choirs in the northeast and across the USA. Notably, he also contributes to the musical landscape by guest conducting local orchestras and choirs.
Lachelle Brooks, a dedicated science educator at DCI, Middle School, hails from Cincinnati, OH. Armed with a BS in Animal Science from The Ohio State University and an MS in Biotechnology from Northwestern, she seamlessly transitioned from the role of a Biotech Scientist to a passionate Biology teacher.
Despite not being directly affiliated with the Academy of Health Sciences in the high school, Lachelle actively contributes to fostering a pipeline for HOSA Future Health Professionals from the middle to high school levels. Her commitment to bridging the gap between middle and high school education is evident in her unwavering support for creating opportunities within the HOSA framework.
Lachelle's teaching philosophy revolves around empowering the next generation of scientists, instilling in them the potential to become global change-makers. Her impact extends beyond the classroom, as she dedicates herself to influencing youth through Health and STEM Education, contributing to the broader landscape of science education.
