Classroom Syllabus

Welcome and Classroom Syllabus

The Bruin PE/Health Staff would like to welcome you to the 2021-22 school year. The PE/Health staff consists of Coach Garrett, Coach Blair, Coach Hallman, and Coach Beck. All of our biographies are located on our BMS PE/Health website. Our classroom expectations and grading scale are listed below. If you have any questions for your specific PE/Health Teacher please reach out to them by email or phone.

Classroom Syllabus: The BMS PE/Health program is one of the best in North Carolina. We want Brown Bruin students to strive to be their very best on a daily basis. Our staff collaborates and develops a plan each week and follows through by implementing those ideas in the gym/classroom.

Grading System: Each student will have an opportunity to earn a maximum grade of 6 pts. Per day.

*Dress Out for PE class: Each student gets one point a piece for shoes, shorts, and a shirt. (3pts.) The shirt and shorts must be Brown Bruin PE uniform or Brown Bruin athletic apparel. The PE Department ordered more PE uniforms so each student will be able to purchase more uniforms if they choose. Parents may need to purchase 3 to 4 sets so students have plenty throughout each week. No open toe shoes, crocks, and/or flip-flops. Soft soled shoes w/closed toes must be worn to PE class. If students do not have shoes, then the PE staff will provide them with a pair. The student will lose points if he/she does not have the proper attire.

*Participation: The Bruin PE classes usually contain three to four activities within a class period. We will also have fitness testing in the fall, winter, and spring to assess fitness improvements throughout the year. The fitness tests will include: Shuttle Run, Push-ups, Sit-ups, Pacer Test, 1 Mile Test and Sit and Reach. Our staff expects students to improve results by the end of the year.

1- Warm-ups: Any activity used to get the body ready for action. Ex: Agilities, Required Running, Partner Perimeter, Noodle Tag just to name a few. (1pt.)

2-Exercises: Tabata, partner exercises, card exercises, group exercises. Exercises usually contain the four types of fitness related components: Muscular Strength/Endurance, Flexibility, and Cardiovascular Endurance. (1pt.)

3-Running: Required Running/Partner Perimeter/Partner Mile/Pacer Run. These are just a few activities which we teach in class. (1pt.)

4-Game/Run/Walk/Weightlifting: The last 12-15 minutes of class will consist of a game chosen by the PE staff. Examples: Speedball, Tchoukball, Swamp Ball, Pinball, Volleyball w/beach ball. Those games are just a few played throughout the year. Students are expected to participate within the games. If students do not participate then he/she will be sent to the Student Management Center for the next day. (-6 pts.)

Run/Walk: Students will get to choose between run/walk or a game. During Run/Walk students are expected to get one lap for every five minutes. Some days we may require that students jog the straightaways and walk the curves. If students fail to cooperate then he/she will be sent to the Student Management Center to complete an alternate assignment. (-6 pts.) Run/Walk students will be able to earn a Run/Walk Club T-shirt once he/she achieves 45 miles (9 completed cards). The PE/Health Department will also hand out Run/Walk award certificates for those students who complete 45 or more miles throughout the year.

Weightlifting: Students will have an opportunity throughout the year to lift weights and learn more about weight training.

Consequences: If students fail to cooperate with direction then he/she will complete:

1- 25 sit-ups and 25 push-ups (-1 pt.)

2- One assignment in the Student Management Center. (-6 pts)

3- Multiple assignments in the Student Management Center. (-12 pts.)

Health Units: Health units will be the first three days of each month starting in November. The units will consist of main learning objectives for each grade. A test/assessment or group project will be given to students on the 3rd day of instruction. Lessons will cover nutrition, alcohol, tobacco, drugs, four main types of health, personal and interpersonal communication skills, and time management strategies. The tests will cover main topics within the lesson. The lead teacher will decide the amount of points given per test. Students are expected to bring a Health notebook and writing utensils to class.

Lost and Found Bucket: Students have the opportunity to find their lost items in a lost and found bucket in the gym. The gym and locker rooms will be cleaned daily. The PE staff will start placing names on uniforms so students can locate their uniforms. Students are encouraged to place their belongings in a personal space within the locker rooms.

Locker Rooms: The student must be able to organize their belongings within the locker rooms. Many students will walk off without taking their PE uniform and apparel with them. This is a big mistake because it could cost them a dress out grade. Remember we do have a lost and found in the gym. The janitors and morning helpers will be sweeping out the locker rooms at night or the morning.

Our PE/Health Staff created a Remind page for each class. Please check Remind on a daily basis to check for class updates. The PE/Health Department will send out updates when necessary.
