Prototypes
Our group went through a variety of prototype iterations and ideas before finally deciding on the AdjuSTATION.
Initial Prototypes
Modular Desk
We started with the plan for a modular desk, which would have one universal joint and multiple attachments. This way, a student would be able to customize the space to the design of their choosing. However, we found that there is a large market presence of products with similar mechanisms, so we decided to move our efforts in a different direction.
What did we learn?
A perfect “universal joint” is not very feasible
Difficult to improve on state of the art
The Pulley System
One of our earliest prototypes was working to utilize unused space on the high walls and ceilings of dorms for storage. This led us to the vertical pulley system.
What did we learn?
Pulleys take advantage of unused ceiling space
Attaching something directly to the ceiling is problematic
Folding Wall Apparatus
Another early prototype was a folding slat wall that utilized the spare space on the wall for storage. It also allowed us to fold the desk up and down.
What did we learn?
Utilization of flat wall and ceiling space
Pull out desk allows for flexibility in use
Final Solution - AdjuSTATION
We eventually decided upon the design of the AdjuSTATION, which combined the Pulley System and the Folding Wall Apparatus. The pulley and folding desk allow us to utilize dorm space in the best way possible.
Advantages:
Takes advantage of wall space
Combines storage and desk
Highly customizable with a removable desk, ability to store various items, and adjustable desk height
