Spirit week came and went three weeks ago with the ending culminating in the Homecoming dance, which was held here on Damien’s campus. The week is always filled with countless games, events and countless food choices. Some tournaments are so large, they spread over multiple days of the week.
SKATE!
Spirit week is a highlight for the student body and the skateboard event was one of the most popular competitions during this time. Mr. Correla, leader of the boarding club, organizes and hosts the weeklong competition for the students.
Mr. Corella said, “This year was pretty popular with all the kids wanting to watch.”
The skate event featured a weeklong game of SKATE, and various skaters performing tricks on any obstacles in the road. SKATE is a game similar to horse in concept but instead of basketball shots the player needs to replicate certain skate tricks. The event is hosted on the side street that runs through Damien, in front of the Spartan Hall. Many students are drawn to this event, as the tricks and watching your classmates fall on their butt appeals to most students.
Lucas Estrada said, “The event was pretty cool to watch as all the skaters gathered to show off some tricks and teach others some too.”
This event has become more popular over the years as many seniors this year participate regularly. Don’t miss out on this last day of the skate competition event!
Student Basketball Tournament
One of the biggest events during spirit week is always the student basketball tournament. This year, six teams entered, all battling for the self-esteem and bragging rights that come with being the champions. Juniors Jorge Sagoon, Slicc Steven Prehistal, and Alek Irarete faced off against fellow Juniors Christian Moussa, Ian Borjal, and Jake Paracortez for the championship game later in the week.
Borjal said, “It was a very intense and competitive game.”
Both teams tried their hardest and played with true skill and finesse, but Sagoon, Slicc Steve, and Irarete came out on top. The 7 to 3 victory-sealing score will forever go down in Spartan history.
Monday
No school!
Tuesday
Tuesday’s theme for spirit week was to wear the jersey of your favorite sports team. The school really came together in this event with most people representing all their favorite teams from the LA Rams, to the Seattle Seahawks, to the Chicago Bulls. For lunch that car club raised funds by appropriately selling tacos on Tuesday. This was a big hit as Spartans of all ages came to the front of the Chapel to get some tacos and horchata from Mr. Jimenez.
Junior and President of the Car Club Patrick Steele said, “The fundraiser was a great success and it really added to the spirit week activities.”
Wednesday
Wednesday was one of the best days of the week with the German club selling Wienerschnitzel and the obstacle course races taking place in the quad. The chili-cheese dogs sold are always a huge crowd-pleaser and are very much enjoyed by students and faculty alike.
The obstacle course is definitely a crowd favorite on spirit week with so many Spartans running through, the friendly competition it encourages. Despite the torn hoodies numerous mat burns, people look forward to racing their fellow Spartans through, over, around, and finally up the course. Siblings, friends, teammates, and even faculty race through the course for bragging rights and just for the fun of it.
Thursday
The hugely popular faculty basketball game was quite lively during spirit week. Teachers all around campus participate in this yearly competition. Staple names like Mr. Peters, Geiger, Holt, Staples and Truax are joined by unfamiliar teachers such as Mr. Aviles and Mr. Perez. This year’s game was won by the green team in a comeback effort pioneered largely by Mr. Holt. The star player of this game, however, was Mr. Aviles awarded MVP after the game. The faculty enjoy themselves and play hard, some too hard. A consequence of this last year was Mrs. Maricic, who suffered an injury to her knee after a hard hit by Mr. Peters.
Students come out in full force during the game, usually filling up the gym and bleachers. Many root for their favorite teachers, and boo their least favorite. The student section can get pretty crazy, with teachers regularly having too discipline and calm students down after baskets being made by Geiger. Students rushed the court to celebrate Mr. Aviles making a basket. Student favorite cheers such as “AIRBALL!” are heard regularly.
This years game was electric and exciting, entertaining all involved. Students will be eagerly waiting for next year’s game. Don’t miss out!
Friday
Friday, the big day before Homecoming and everyone was excited from all the spirit week activities. We had basketball games, skating competitions, and even a taco Tuesday. On friday we topped of the festivities with games of human foosball. The theme of friday was green and gold with freshmen wearing gold, sophomores wearing green, juniors wearing grey, and seniors wearing black.
During the human foosball game many people were lining up in the senior quad to give it a try. For the game, people were being strapped to a rope in a giant inflatable arena with two sides trying to kick a soccer ball in the opponents goal just like a giant game of foosball. Spartans seemed very excited to try this out.
“It has this appeal to it and you just want to try it,” said Sophomore Spartan Gabriel Kapra.
These festivities went on from break to lunch throughout the day. A pep rally was held at the end of the day to get everyone pumped for Homecoming football game. We had the cheer and dance teams come out to perform their routines. We also played games like hungry hippos and tri-school dodge-ball. To end the rally, our varsity football captains got the entire student body riled up for the football game by giving a few words of encouragement. Finally, with the end of the pep rally our spirit week came to an end finishing off with an exciting week before Homecoming.
