The Spartan adventure club had their first adventure of the year Sunday, October 20 when they traveled to Downtown Los Angeles to see some of the sights that attract tourists from all over the world. Seniors Jeff Cai, Ezequiel Lopez, and Bert Lin, junior Alan Huizar, sophomore Marco Valadez, and freshmen Michael Gonzalez made the day trip with Mr. Geiger and his wife.

Father Paul, Mrs. Sinclair, some club members, and their parents get the day started off with the celebration of mass.

The day started with Mass in the Damien chapel celebrated by Fr. Paul, after which the group drove over to the downtown Azusa station to catch the Metro Gold Line into Union Station in downtown LA. The Spartans explored Olvera street, taking in some of the free historical museums and shops in Los Angeles. Bert Lin was excited to get some of the amazing taquitos that are sold along the historic calle.

The band of 8 then took to the streets, walking over to the Grand Central Market with a quick stop to check out the interior of the Bradbury building.

“The Grand Central Mark was a different environment. It was very crowded,” said Lin.

Alan Huizar commented, “[I] really liked the diversity of food that represented a lot of different cultures”.

Huizar, Gonzalez, and Valadez journey forth into the Broad’s unique architecture!

After refueling their tanks with some delicious food, the group headed over to Broad Art Museum. “My favorite part (of the day) was meeting ‘Joe’ at the Broad,” said Michael Gonzalez, referring to one of the artworks.

Marco Valadez was impressed by the “many unique” works of art.

After taking in the unique images of the Broad’s collection, the Spartans made their way to their final stop of the day, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angeles.

Jeff Cai exclaimed, “The Cathedral was shocking. The Mausoleum was something I’ve never experienced.”

Ezequiel Lopez commented, “After going to the same church every day, then you see the Cathedral and you see just how different churches can be.”

The now-tired travelers headed back home the same way they came on the Metro Gold Line.

Mr. Geiger remarked, “The happiest part of the day was the fact the adventure happened. It was great seeing each of the students share and experience just some of the sights that make LA such a great city.”

The next Spartan Adventure is scheduled for Saturday, November 16th in which the theme will focus on “A Spartan is Spiritual”. All students are welcome to be apart of the adventure as the Spartans will be visiting the BAPS Hindu temple in Chino Hills, the Hsi Lai Buddist Temple in Hacienda Heights, and St. John’s Coptic Orthodox church in West Covina. See Mr. Geiger in room 303 for more details and to join the Spartan Adventure Club’s contact list.
