In this column, Regan discusses celebrity drama and controversies.
Both dominating their own regions of the pop scene, musicians Charli XCX and Taylor Swift have both cultivated their own brands of success. Different as they may be, the two artists have enjoyed a seemingly positive friendship for most of their careers. However, a diss track on Swift's newest album has thrown their relationship into the limelight. It seems that there may be more animosity between the two women than anyone had previously guessed.
Charli XCX, born Charlotte Emma Aitchison, started her music career in 2008, creating an album that would gain traction on the website Myspace and eventually get her a record deal with Asylum Records in 2010. Following that, Charli released songs such as “I Like It”, “Fancy, and “Boom Clap”, which were major pop successes. In 2018, Taylor and Charli had their first professional interaction when Charli, along with Camilla Cabello, opened for Taylor’s Reputation tour. In an interview with PEOPLE, Charli regarded Taylor, stating that “She’s always been very kind to me and I’m very excited about the tour.” However, the tour was not without its own drama. In an interview with Pitchfork, Charli claimed that singing to Taylor’s age demographic felt like “waving to five-year-olds”. She later clarified on X that she meant no disrespect to Taylor by this comment and that the interview was taken out of context. She explained that opening for Taylor challenged her to broaden her performing skills and was a huge honor, ultimately putting this drama to rest.
In Mar. 2022, Charli began dating George Daniels, the drummer for the band The 1975. In May of 2023, Taylor entered a tumultuous relationship with The 1975’s lead singer, Matty Healy. This relationship was not made to last, and the two singers broke up the same year. Only a few months afterward, Charli and George got married. This set the stage for Charli’s song “Sympathy is a Knife”, which was the third track on her hit album Brat. This songs lyrics included, “I don't wanna share this space/I don't wanna force a smile/This one girl taps my insecurities/Don't know if it's real or if I'm spiraling” and “Don't wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend's show/Fingers crossed behind my back,/I hope they break up quick.” Fans were quick to theorize that these lyrics were referencing Taylor, with many becoming angry at her for expressing jealousy and wishing Taylor and Matty would break up. However, in an interview with Vulture, Charli clarified the meaning of her song, saying that it is “about me and my feelings and my anxiety and the way my brain creates narratives and stories in my head when I feel insecure.” While the song is likely about Taylor, it seems as though the song is more about Charli’s personal struggles with comparison rather than a diss.
Following this, the artists continued to show no public animosity toward each other. In fact, their behavior showed quite the opposite. After rumors arose about Taylor purposefully dropping new editions of her album The Tortured Poets Department, Charli simultaneously released the deluxe edition of Brat in hopes of knocking her off the charts. Fans were outraged. At one of Charli’s concerts, passionate fans began chanting “Taylor is dead”, which was extremely ill-received by Charli. She addressed this behavior on X, posting “Can the people who do this please stop… It is the opposite of what I want and it disturbs me that anyone would think there is room for this in this community.” Later that same year, Taylor commented on Charli in an interview with Vulture. She had nothing but good things to say, claiming that she had been “blown away by Charli’s melodic sensibilities” and that her writing was “surreal and inventive.” If anything was brewing under the surface between the two musicians, they showed none of it to the public.
As of Oct. 2025, Taylor has released her twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl. The seventh track on the album, titled “Actually Romantic”, was immediately assumed to be a diss track against Charli. The song tells the tale of someone intent on tearing Taylor down, while Taylor dismisses it as a romantic obsession. The song contains lyrics seemingly directed at Charli, including, “I heard you call me 'Boring Barbie' when the coke's got you brave/High-fived my ex and then you said you're glad he ghosted me/Wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face.” The reference to cocaine, a substance Charli has been open about using, as well as mentions of Charli supporting Taylor's recent breakup and writing a song about her, seemed to make it clear who these lyrics were intended for. On top of this, fans remarked on how the title “Actually Romantic”, resembles the title of a popular song by Charli, “Everything is Romantic”. In the “Track by Track Version” of her album, Taylor states that the song is about “realizing that someone else has kind of had a one-sided adversarial relationship with you that you didn't know about.” Her explanation was on the vague side and she never confirmed anything about Charli, but many fans seemed certain that the track couldn’t possibly be about anyone else.
While many of Taylor’s supporters quickly turned against Charli, a significant number of people criticized Taylor for punching down. Despite the commercial success of The Life of a Showgirl, Swift has been receiving some of her heaviest online backlash yet. Even some of her most dedicated fans have begun raising eyebrows at her recent work, feeling that she is cranking out content rather than real art. Taylor’s diss on Charli was the nail in the coffin for some fans and left them with a bad taste in their mouths. It is impossible to know whether or not Charli’s private behavior warranted the diss track but, for some fans, the whole situation felt a lot like bullying. “Sympathy is a Knife” has been defended as a remarkably vulnerable look into mental health and self-esteem, and some have wondered if Taylor is solely basing her diss track off of the lyrics of this song. Others have advocated for Swift, defending her right to express her own feelings in her art. Regardless of the varying opinions, it cannot be denied that the song has certainly gotten people talking.
Vague yet heated, the Taylor Swift and Charli XCX drama has been, all things considered, a decently civil affair. The two artists have repeatedly avoided mentioning each other by name, leaving spectators with an endless amount of questions and conspiracies. Whether or not Charli will acknowledge Taylor for now remains unknown. However, if she does respond, it will no doubt solidify the rift between the two musicians.
