Directed and choreographed by the wonderful Erica Bury, music-directed by the talented Katie Jarvis Shomler, and produced by Tianna Eddy, the show also has the support of Julia Cuppy, Director of Theatre at GPHS. With this powerhouse team behind the scenes, you can expect a performance full of energy, creativity, and unforgettable moments. HONK! Jr. brings the classic story of The Ugly Duckling to life in a fun, heartwarming way. The musical follows a duckling who looks different from her siblings and is unfairly labeled as “ugly” because of it. After being pushed away, she sets off on an unexpected adventure, where she meets all kinds of characters and learns to embrace what makes her unique. It’s a journey of self-discovery, acceptance, and celebrating the traits that set us apart. The show is colorful, full of energy, and packed with catchy songs and lovable moments. It’s on the shorter side, making it a great fit for audiences of all ages, whether you’re a kid, a parent, or just someone who loves a good story with a big heart. HONK! Jr. reminds us that being different isn’t a flaw; it’s something to be proud of.
Rylie Revercomb, a senior at GPHS, takes center stage as Ugly in HONK! Jr. and she’s bringing the character to life with heart, humor, and a whole lot of personality. When asked about her favorite line in the show, she didn’t hesitate: “This is your daughter, dear.” “AAAARGHHH—I've created a MONSTER!” Revercomb says it’s the funniest moment in the play, which automatically makes it the best in her book. Beyond the laughs, Revercomb believes HONK! Jr. is a story everyone should see. It’s a heartfelt journey about finding yourself and learning to accept who you are, even when the world tries to tell you otherwise. From the very beginning, Ugly is different; she doesn’t look like her siblings and doesn’t fit in with the other ducks on the farm. However, through her adventure, she learns to embrace the characteristics that make her unique. She finds pride and love for herself, even in the face of teasing and bullying. That message of inner acceptance and self-love is what makes the show so powerful. And here’s a fun teaser: Revercomb wants the audience to know that Ugly actually has a real name, but you’ll have to see the show to find out what it is!
Abby Hanson, a junior at GPHS, takes on the role of Ida in HONK! Jr., and she’s loving every minute of it. When asked about her favorite character in the show, she gave a shoutout to the Cat (played by Veira K-Dole), not just because the character is fun, but because the actress playing her, Viera, absolutely nails it. Hanson says Viera brings the Cat to life in such a bold and memorable way that it’s impossible not to love her performance. Hanson believes people should come see HONK! Jr., because it’s more than just a cute musical; it has a deeper message that really sticks with the audience. It shows that standing out and being different isn’t something to hide from; it’s something to celebrate. She wants everyone to know how impressive the South Middle School students are. They have joined the cast and are doing an incredible job, making this a true all-district production. Her favorite part of the experience has been the people, getting to work with so many new faces and building connections with castmates she has never worked with before. And her favorite line in the show? “Different isn’t bad.” To her, that line captures the heart of the story and reminds us all that being unique is what makes us special.
Eden Geier, a sophomore at GPHS, takes on multiple roles in HONK! Jr., including Greylag, Penny, and parts of both the Poultry and Blizzard ensembles. She’s bringing energy and versatility to the stage, and she’s loving every second of it. When asked about her favorite character, Geier chose Ida (played by Abby Hanson) because, from the very beginning, Ida is accepting and supportive of Ugly, even when no one else is. That kind of kindness really stands out. Geier believes HONK! Jr. tells a powerful and touching story. It’s not just about a duckling, it’s about learning that being different is okay and that you should never judge someone based on how they look. The message hits home, and Geier hopes audiences walk away feeling inspired to be more open-hearted and accepting. It’s a show full of heart, and Geier’s proud to be part of it.
Veira K-Dole, a freshman at GPHS, steps into the spotlight as the Cat in HONK! Jr., and she’s having an absolute blast with the role. Her favorite line? “Well, curdle the cream on my cornflakes—he escaped.” It cracks her up every time. When asked about her favorite character, she joked, “My favorite character is Cat, obviously—just kidding!” She gave a shoutout to the Bullfrog (played by Samantha Rivera), saying she loves how the character teaches an important lesson to Ugly while performing what she calls a total “banger” of a song. For K-Dole, the best part of HONK! Jr. is the sense of community. She loves getting to work with such a talented and supportive cast, hearing everyone’s wonderful voices, and just having fun together, whether it’s backstage, at rehearsals, or during those little in-between moments. It’s not just a show; it’s a shared experience.
Samantha Rivera, a junior at GPHS, brings her talent and energy to multiple roles in HONK! Jr., including Henrietta, Bullfrog, Goose Squadron, and Blizzard Ensemble. She’s been working hard behind the scenes and on stage to help bring this colorful, heartfelt show to life. When asked about her favorite character, Samantha chose Ida (played by Abby Hanson). She admires Ida because she doesn’t care what her son looks like, she loves him unconditionally, and stands by him no matter what. That kind of acceptance and support really stuck with Rivera and shows the deeper message of the show. Rivera wants people to know just how much work goes into a production like this. She says the cast memorizes every single line and song, even the ones that aren’t theirs, almost subconsciously. It’s like the whole show becomes second nature after all the rehearsals, and everyone is constantly supporting each other, whether they are on stage or off. For Samantha, being part of HONK! Jr. has been a fantastic experience. She’s proud to be part of a cast that’s not only talented but also incredibly dedicated. The show’s message, that being different is okay and that everyone deserves love and acceptance, is something she hopes the audience takes to heart. It’s more than just a musical; it’s a story that matters.
