Naia Olivier reports on an interesting social media phenomenon that's been flooding GPHS student's Instagram accounts in this pop culture feature.
Instagram was created in 2010. Now, almost twelve years later, Instagram is still used as a major social media platform. Recently, high schools and colleges have started using Instagram to communicate with students. Co-Owner of Campus Suite blogs, Steve Williams, says that “It's a powerful medium in the social media mix for public schools to depict and share great images, stories, and ideas that can help engage students, parents, and community.”
Since students have returned from distance learning, Instagram accounts under the name of high schools have popped up. These accounts are connected to anonymous students who choose a theme for the account and then post photos of students accordingly. The most popular themes nationally have been: bad parking, bathroom feet, sleeping, PDA, and more.
Many people have argued the ethicality behind these accounts. Are they for giggles or bullying? Can they go too far? Few schools in the nation have actually banned or addressed the Instagram accounts which use their schools' names. Most accounts are not harmful; therefore, many schools leave them alone. Whether these accounts are good or bad, they are nonetheless a part of our very own community at GPHS, so let's take a look at the most popular circulating Instagram “fun” accounts, as well as recognize the official GPHS accounts that YOU, as a student, should be following.
Starting off strong is the OG of our GPHS Insta accounts, GPHS bad parking. This account started in October of 2021 and rapidly started to gain followers. Today, they have 754 followers and have shared 25 posts with multiple slides that are filled with photos of embarrassing parking, as well as student crash photos. This account is still the most popular “fun” account out of all of them. The account owners are still anonymous, but it is clear that, whoever they are, they are doing god's work. After all, they are: “Fixing your bad parking one post at a time.”
The second most popular Insta account is GPHS bathroom feet. This account has 552 followers, although it has received some backlash around the account being set in school bathrooms. The owners are again anonymous, although they have specified that they can not get their own photos from the men's bathroom, so they asked for submissions. All of the posts have funny and witty captions, as well as comments filled with students trying to identify students by their shoes. This account is full of fun, but it definitely adds to the stress of finding matching socks every morning.
Ending the top three “fun” accounts is GPHS PDA. The bio of this account reads: “Submit photos of you posing next to PDA.” All of the posts are candid and the PDA is usually in the background of the people who are “posing” for the photo. Although there are only 11 posts, this account is quite popular and entertaining. There is no question that PDA is infesting our halls at GPHS, and this account is a humorous way of bring attention to it, as well as slightly humbling the couples around school that cannot stay professional and PG.
GPHS short people is next on the list. This account is fairly popular and active. This account is either run by a very tall person or a very short person… there is no in-between. Every post is a picture taken in a bird-eye angle of a tall person(s) next to a short person(s). This angle gives the allusion that the height difference is even greater than it is. The biggest problem about this account is that these people are finding students to feature because they stand out due to their heights. This can negatively impact students who struggle with body dysmorphia. In The Scroll’s last issue, there is an article that addresses the struggle of height insecurities. That aside, many people enjoy this account and they are always open for submissions.
Last, but not least is GPHS caught sleeping. This theme is very popular so GPHS has not one, but two sleeping accounts. The first account has 427 followers and the second has 152. Looking at HS Instagram accounts in a national view, sleeping accounts are the most popular. Everyone knows that HS students are sleep-deprived, and this account brings that into focus. This account has 18 posts of kids sleeping around school, and some of the posts are multiple slides. Some classes can get slow and its very tempting to lay down and dose off… this account has made students more sleep conscious, but it isn’t enough to keep everyone awake.
Again, it is important to acknowledge that, while these pages might be worth some laughs, they may have repercussions for individuals. These accounts can subject people to unwanted attention and the account owners most likely do not ask for consent when posting. What do you think? Are these pages harmful or fun, and when do they cross the line?
Aside from these pop up Instas, GPHS also has a few accounts that are sponsored and official. It is worth checking these out to get a better vision of what is happening at our school.
