The Japanese manga and anime series Death Note has recently released a video game adaption: Death Note: Killer Within. This game is not to be confused with Death Note: Kira Game, or various other previously released video games from other publishers. Death Note: Killer Within was released on Nov. 5, 2024, and is available to purchase and play on Playstation 4, Playstation 5, and PC.
The Death Note manga was released in Dec. 2003, with a total of 12 volumes and an additional 13th “how to read” volume. The manga was later made into an anime that premiered on Oct. 4, 2006– with a total of 37 episodes. Death Note has only grown in popularity since then, due to its unique art style depicted in both the manga and anime versions. Its captivating soundtrack, and its combination of suspense, philosophical depth, and psychological intrigue make the series stand out amongst other series. Death Note has also significantly influenced fashion through various characters and has, overall, made a big impact on gothic subcultures. According to Dexerto, a gaming and entertainment online magazine Death Note, “doesn't need to rely on fast-paced action scenes to keep the audience hooked. Instead, the cat-and-mouse battle of wits between Light Yagami and L cements the series' status as one of the most memorable anime (and TV series) of all time.”

Similar to Among Us, an online multiplayer game that was popular on social media back in 2020, Death Note: Killer Within is an online social deduction game. The game can be played with up to 10 players split into two teams. The overall goal of the game is to figure out each other's identities to either eliminate L or seize the Death Note. The game follows Kira and L as they attempt to overpower one another; each player is assigned to various team roles to help lead either Kira or L to victory. Players also have the opportunity to customize their avatars with accessories and play with friends. According to Bandai Namco, an online gaming store, “Kira and L clash to control the game as equally matched opponents while hiding their true identities from each other in the world of DEATH NOTE Killer Within. Enjoy a battle of wits as Kira and his followers or L and the investigators.” Since the game's initial release, the media agrees that it is a great multiplayer game– especially when played with friends.
Overall, Death Note: Killer Within relights the awesome series– and gives old fans a chance to revisit the cultural phenomenon, while also opening up a pathway for new people to discover the fandom.
