Painting & Drawing

Painting & Drawing is an 8th grade elective that lasts for 12 weeks.

This course teaches students to develop an idea or theme in a small body of work and the technical skills to communicate the idea in an expressive way. Students look at works of art and learn to identify some of the ways professional artists use elements, techniques, and visual symbols to communicate an idea throughout multiple works of art. They refine their own observation skills and understand the importance of a well planned composition. In addition, they learn to use color and value effectively to create the illusion of depth (shading, blending, and texture).

A variety of media (charcoal, pastels, colored pencil, graphite, watercolor pencils and acrylic) and techniques (blending, hatching, scumbling, etc) are explored as the students complete multiple skill-building exercises and learn to draw and paint from life as well as from pictures as resources.

A sketchbook will be kept by the students and bi-weekly assignments will be part of the final grade. The sketchbook assignments align with skills being learned in class and provide for extra practice to build skills.

Students evaluate their artwork in similar areas to other art classes; Idea Development, Technical Skills, Craftsmanship and Artistic Behavior/Effort. They critique and reflect upon their work in writing using the vocabulary and concepts learned in each unit.

In this folder you will find: Daily Calendar and Learning Targets, Welcome Presentation, Art Class Routines and Idea Development documents.
