When you walk into Plainfield School, the first person to greet you is Mrs. Avina. She has numerous responsibilities running the school office from answering the telephone to helping parents, students, teachers and our principal. Mrs. Avina has worked for district 62 for 17 years and loves her job. When she isn't working, she enjoys spending time with her husband, children and grandkids. Her hobbies include reading and listening to music. Plainfield teachers agree that Mrs. Avina does an amazing job every day.

Ms. Arroyo is new to Plainfield. She was hired two months ago to assist Mrs. Avina in the school office. Like Mrs. Avina, Ms. Arroyo also has many responsibilities. She answers phones, makes copies and helps parents and kids. Ms. Arroyo was born in Chicago, She loves her new job, especially being around the children. She enjoys cooking and Mexican food is her favorite. She also likes to travel. Switzerland is her favorite destination spot! Welcome Ms. Arroyo! Keep up the great job!

What Makes Slime Stick Around?
What Makes Slime Stick Around?
Slime is kind of stretchy material like Playdoh, but it is made out of glue. It's like glue, but it doesn't stick to your fingers. There are different kinds of slime. Some of them include glitter, galaxy, foam, butter, clear, cream and jiggly slime. To play with slime, you can make bubbles, stretch it, make swirls with it and squish it. It's important to take care of it so that it doesn't get hard. To protect the slime, you can put it in a bag or container so it doesn't spill. A simple recipe is glue, food coloring and Borax.

E. E.
E.E. came to Plainfield in first grade having had just moved to the USA from Mongolia. As a newcomer, he didn't know much English, but according to his first grade teacher Mrs. Bell, "E.E. soon learned to read and write very well, even better than many of his classmates. He had a natural love of learning that was exciting to watch." Today, E.E. is a third grader. He loves drawing, reading and soccer. His favorite part of the school day is PE, recess, lunch and target time. When he grows up, he wants to be a program engineer because he likes computer coding and thinks it's kind of amazing that one little code can power big technology! Currently, E.E. is one of the top readers in our MyOn Reading Challenge. Keep up the great work E.E!

G.B. was born in Honduras. She immigrated to the United States with her mom when she was seven years-old. G.B. came to Plainfield in fourth grade. She is now a fifth grader in Mrs. Cooper's class. G.B. loves school. Her favorite subject is math and she enjoys playing soccer and spending time with her friends and being part of the Emoji News. Her teacher, Mrs. Cooper said, "G.B. is a very hard working student who came with very little English last year!! She is inquisitive, funny, always smiling, creative/crafty and is the best slime maker in our classroom!! She is never afraid to ask the question that all may be thinking but are afraid to ask! She advocates for herself because she truly has the desire to learn! She keeps the energy flowing in our room (always positive) and is motivated to tackle any challenge put in front of her. One of the best problem solvers in the class!"

Coding Club is for fourth and fifth graders. They meet after school on Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The club is run by Mr. Peebles and Mrs. Cooper. The theme for this session is “music and sound”. Students code characters to dance to music and interact with other characters. They are the creators. They share their coding creations with each other and each week learn new ways to code. It’s very cool!

Ms. Kayla Riportella, is an alumni of District 62. She now works as a high school teacher for Wawasee High School in Indiana and serves as the advisor of the school newspaper, Smoke Signals. She is the daughter of our 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Riportella. Thank you Ms. Riportella for sharing your time and ideas with us. You are truly an inspiration!

Ms. Serrato is bilingual and she has a huge responsibility of editing and writing the paper to distribute to the Hispanic communities in Chicagoland. Ms Serrato visited Plainfield School to speak to the Emoji News and gave us many new ideas for our paper. Thank you Ms. Serrato for visiting us and for your time!
