December is a time of gift giving and for caring. The teachers and staff at Plainfield are gifts to our community. They are dedicated to helping each student make reach their potential. This month, we are highlighting four of our new teachers. Check out their stories below.

Miss Soni grew up in Des Plaines. This is her fourth year of teaching. She loves teaching all subjects, especially Science. When she isn't teaching, she enjoys spending time with family and friends. Miss Soni is very excited about her upcoming marriage this June. She loves the color pink and her favorite food is basically anything with cheese or bread. Miss Soni doesn't have any pets, but would love a dog. We are happy that Miss Soni is teaching at Plainfield and look forward to seeing her wedding pictures next summer.

Mrs. Heindl-Porter - was born in Wisconsin, the home of the Green Bay Packers. She loves Harry Potter, Star Wars and the movie Frozen. If you are stuck on finding a book, she is the person to help because she LOVES reading! She has been teaching for 7 years, but this is her first year at Plainfield. She is married and has dogs named after Star Wars characters. When she isn't teaching, you can find Mrs. H-P running in marathons or playing her ukulele. Her students like her positive attitude and caring nature.

Miss Alexandru - The first thing you may notice about Miss Alexandru is her height! She is tall, very tall at 6'2.5" tall! She was born in Chicago. Her favorite food is macaroni and cheese and hot sauce! This is her first year teaching. She likes working with kids and learning with them. Her favorite subjects are Science and Social Studies. Miss Alexandru has two birds, Charlie and Sunny. For fun, she likes to draw, swim and ride her bike. Her favorite color is purple. Thanks Miss Alexandru for joining the Plainfield team!

Miss Acuña - Is our new first grade teacher. She has been teaching for four years. Miss Acuña enjoys helping students that speak another language and teaching through social justice. Miss Acuña speaks Spanish. She was born in Chicago. Her favorite color is turquoise. Miss Acuña loves her family. She has a dog named Lola. In her spare time, she loves to play basketball and enjoys playing the violin. Her favorite food is a Mexican Mole. We are all happy and lucky that Miss Acuña joined Plainfield School.
Amulet: The Stonekeeper is a 2008 children's graphic novel written and illustrated by Kazu Kibuishi. The book concerns the adventures of Emily Hayes, who must try to rescue her kidnapped mother with the assistance of her younger brother Navin, a mysterious amulet, and helper robots such as Miskit.
The Babysitters Club is about four girls that form a babysitters club and become good friends.
Mrs. Castro's movie recommendation for the Winter Break is "Coco."
The “Coco” storyline is based on the Mexican holiday of Día de Muertos, otherwise known as Day of the Dead.

Q - What can I do about test anxiety? I always get very nervous when I have to take a test.
A - Just relax and try your best. When you know you are going to have a test, you can look over your notes every day for a few minutes the week before, try to study with a partner, get a good night sleep the night before and make sure to eat a healthy breakfast that morning.

Kindergarten - Students are reading different versions of The Gingerbread Man and doing various retelling activities.
First grade - Students are doing a fun creative writing project writing their very own Gingerbread story!
Second Grade - The second grade teachers are doing an author study on Cynthia Rylant.
Third Grade - Third graders just enjoyed a celebration of cultures with food, family and fun!
Fourth Grade - In Mr. Peebles class, students are creating a December book.
Fifth Grade - Miss Alexandru’s students are making their own stockings for a secret project.
Physical Education - Mr. Schelhorn is shaking things up with fun physical education units like dance and hockey.
Art - Mr. Smith is working with the 4th and 5th grade students who are learning about HUICHOL Yarn painting. The students animal portraits symbolizes important ideas about their own lives.
