As a member of the Sand Creek High School English Dept., I am responsible for ensuring that 11th grade students adhere to the Colorado State Standards while exploring the vast literary works of American authors.Â
In the 23-24 school year, students in English III will begin to master text analysis and informative writing and research. Their work will encompass each of the major standards for reading, writing, research, and communication. Students will be responsible for creating answering our first unit's Essential Question: In what ways does the struggle for freedom change with history? They will read texts from MyPerspectives (textbook)-- both classic and contemporary works-- to find examples to support their claims regarding the struggle for freedom in America. Students will conduct research to further support their opinions. Audience members and readers within the class will be able to offer critique and feedback that each student will use to enhance his/her writing, and submit a revision for the next phase.
In the 2023-24 school, I will also have the opportunity to teach AP Literature and Composition for the first time. I will work closely with AP Mentors in and out of the SCHS Community to ensure that all students can be successful in the class and on the AP Exam. Students will learn both literary criticism and analysis in addition to strengthening their writing skills through close reading of poetry, short stories, and long fiction.
