To reflect my commitment to learning new skills both inside and outside of my content area (English), I attended several conferences in July of 2023. I attended the AP Summer Institute in Erie, CO to learn to implement College Board's AP strategies. I also attended the Cato Institute's Sphere Summit to explore the topic of teaching Civil Discourse in upper level classes.
I also read several books to improve the way that I view myself. Among my favorites: Death Note and The Book of Accidents.
In the 2019-20 school year, I was committed to learning more about my physical health, so I learned more about movement and nutrition. I enjoyed hiking, HIIT training, and roller skating, and have set a personal goal to hike as many 14'ers as possible in 2020!
In the 2020-21 school year, I was committed to learning more about the "School to Prison Pipeline," the incorporation of classic and contemporary literature by BIOPC authors into my American Literature class, as well as making a commitment to being Anti-Racist. Faced with the challenge of teaching virtually as well as in-person due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I also committed to taking online courses to increase the level of engagement my virtual students demonstrate.
In the 2021-22 school year, I was committed to learning more about Social Emotional Learning and promoting sound mental health practices and coping strategies in my classroom to assist students when they are not successful to continue to move forward with purpose and determination.
In the 2022-23 school year, I committed myself to learning more about different religious practices throughout the world. I studied Catholicism, Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam! I learned about each in an effort to better understand my students' diverse backgrounds and practices.
I was accepted into UNC's Extended Studies program. I worked on my Ed.,S. (Educational Specialist) credential in the area of Educational Leadership. I graduated in May of 2020, and will take the Praxis (as soon as we can test in-person again), earning my administrative credential.
