January – Module 5: Rates and Ratios
Students will explore writing ratios in three ways, finding equivalent ratios, completing ratio tables, and calculating unit rates. After finding the unit rate, students will determine which item is the better value, rounding to the nearest hundredth when working with money.
A RATIO is a way to compare two quantities by showing how many times the first number contains the second one.
A RATE is a special type of ratio where the two quantities being compared have different units. A common rate is miles per hour (MPH) or price per item.

January 2025
7th Grade Math
This month, seventh grade math students will be diving into two essential algebra skills: simplifying expressions and solving two-step equations. These are key building blocks for mastering algebra and preparing for more advanced math topics.
7th Grade Accelerated Math
This month, the students will be learning all about inequalities. We’ll explore how to solve them, graph them, and understand what makes them different from equations. Inequalities are essential for understanding real-world situations where solutions can fall within a range of possibilities.
8th Grade Algebra 1A
January 2026
We just completed Part 2 of Module 5, which focused on proportional relationships. Learning about proportional relationships is important because they help students understand how quantities change together in predictable ways.
Proportional relationships are used frequently in the real world, including shopping (unit price, sales, tips, and tax), cooking (scaling recipes up or down), travel (speed = distance ÷ time), and money management (pay rates, budgeting, interest, and planning). Developing this skill helps students make sense of the world around them, prepares them for higher-level math, and builds strong reasoning skills they will use long after school.
Our next unit of study will be functions. In this unit, students will explore how tables, graphs, and equations are used to represent real-world situations and how these representations are connected.
8th Grade Honors Algebra 1
January 2026
In January, students will explore exponential functions. They will learn and apply exponent rules, including zero and negative exponents, multiplying and dividing exponents, and powers of powers.
Students will analyze exponential functions using tables and graphs, focusing on key features such as the common ratio, growth or decay, and the y-intercept. They will also practice graphing exponential functions and begin applying these concepts to introductory real-world problems involving exponential growth and decay.
