NOVEMBER HIGHLIGHTS
Mrs. Rollins’ students went to Home Depot for a hands-on toolbox-building workshop. The visit gave them a chance to work with real tools, follow step-by-step instructions, and practice problem-solving in a fun, engaging environment. The Home Depot staff guided the students through measuring, hammering, and assembling their own wooden toolboxes, helping them build both skills and confidence. By the end of the trip, every student had a completed project to take home and a sense of pride in what they created. After Home Depot, the students went for a well deserved lunch break at Burger King. While they were there, they gained valuable real-world skills. They practiced reading a menu, making choices, and ordering their meals politely and confidently. Finally, they practiced their money skills and social skills by using appropriate restaurant etiquette.
Dr. Wilson’s students went to Wal-Mart where they practiced important life skills. They learned how to navigate the store, identify different departments, compare prices, use the dollar up method, and practice social skills. This helped the students build independence, responsibility, and confidence in everyday shopping situations.
Mrs. Zimmerman’s students learned about different animals that begin preparing for the colder months ahead. Some animals gather and store food, while others migrate to warmer places. The students also talked about having good manners in the classroom and at home. Some good manners include saying please, thank you, and you’re welcome. This lesson prepared them for their upcoming Thanksgiving holiday at their homes.
All students from the low incidence program had fun with Thanksgiving activities. Turkeys were created, Thanksgiving BINGO was played, and Thanksgiving pies were tasted. Students talked about what they were thankful for and why Thanksgiving is important to them.
