For 2nd Quarter, 6th graders will be focusing on informational texts. We will be incorporating a variety of different articles and short stories while we research, have Socratic Seminar discussions, debate, and create our own infographics.
"The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared." -Lois Lowry
Our 7th grade ELA students are diving into some exciting new learning! We’re continuing to build strong reading and writing skills by analyzing texts, finding evidence to support our ideas, and exploring how themes grow and develop throughout a story. Before we jump into our next novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry, students will read a few short stories to discover what makes dystopian literature so fascinating. As we read The Giver, students will take a closer look at how characters and their choices shape the plot and how a character’s point of view can change as the story unfolds. This novel provides an exciting unit full of curiosity and great discussions!
Additionally, along the way, we’ll keep building reading comprehension, exploring rich vocabulary (including figurative and technical language), and practicing clear, purposeful writing for different audiences.
The 8th-Grade students are wrapping up our study on persuasion with several different projects on advertising, debates, or Socratic Seminars. Check with your child's ELA teacher to see what their class is doing.
The Winter i-Ready Benchmark Diagnostics are coming on Tuesday and Thursday, December 2 & 4. The Reading test is on Thursday. These scores will influence which high school courses will be recommended. They will also determine who will be in an intervention for the second semester.
All of the ELA classes will wrap up our unit on Word Work, where students have practice daily on definition creation, connotation, and sentence crafting.
