How is this year's 7th grade basketball team doing? You may ask, and in this article we will take a look at how the team is doing, and talk to Brigid McCrate on her thoughts about the team.
The basketball team is led by their coach Mr. Haase. This year all the girls have made lots of improvement both individually and as a team. They have increased their technical skills and their knowledge of the game. They are currently working hard on improving their out of bounds plays at their practices. The girls will soon compete in the upcoming district finals starting on February 26th, and ending with the final game to determine the district champion on February 29th at HMS. In an interview with Brigid McCrate she said that the team is “pretty challenging but I’d say it’s helpful”. She was very happy to make the team and has benefited a lot from pushing herself and working hard with the team.
The team has had many wins and losses during the season, and at the game on January 31st against CMS the first basket was scored by number 33 Brynn Sainsbury. During the game number 3 Danica Kostelankcik scored one awesome basket, and the amazing number 23 Mia Haugens scored a whopping 3 baskets. The A team ended their game with a final winning score of 27 - 6 and the B team won with a score of 14 - 11. Proving that all their hard work is paying off.
“Woooo!” And the crowd goes wild! Have you ever gone to one of the girl’s basketball games? Have you ever wondered how they make tons of shots and work so well together? Well here, we answer all these questions. You might be wondering how the team is improving or adapting, so we have a direct quote from the 8th grade girls basketball coach, Mrs. Reiff. She stated that, “So far, we’ve improved tremendously from last year. They’re definitely improving; they’re getting better with shooting and defense. They're doing a really good job of transitioning up the court, and going fast up the court.” During the interview, we also asked what the main struggle of coaching a team was. She responded with, “I would say the main struggle is, there’s not a lot of time in the season, so you kind of have to pick and choose what you have time for. So it’s kind of picking and choosing what we’re going to put into practice with the limited time we have.” So there you have it! This is how the 8th grade girl’s basketball team is so fun and exciting to watch!
The 8th grade girls basketball team advanced to the semi final game with a victory over CMS. Despite a great defensive effort, the Cardunals came up short against Westfield. The team showed tremendous growth over the past season and their high school basketball future careers are bright.
