"You can't run away from who you are, but what you can do is run toward who you want to be"
For 4th Quarter, 6th graders will be reading Ghost by Jason Reynolds. The novel follows Castle “Ghost” Cranshaw, a boy with a troubled past who discovers his talent for running. Ghost has always been fast—ever since the night he and his mother had to flee his home. When he stumbles upon a track team led by the tough but caring Coach Brody, Ghost is given a chance to channel his speed into something positive.
7th grade students have an exciting 4th quarter ahead of them. The 7th grade teachers like to save the best for last, and the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton never disappoints! Students kicked off the 4th quarter with a research project and presentation on different aspects of the 1960s. The purpose of the project is to help students gain valuable background information about the time period in which the novel is set, which they will begin reading after spring break.
In April, students will also participate in a Poetry vs. Song tournament in honor of National Poetry Month. Throughout the tournament, students will review figurative language and analyze its use and meaning in the different poems and songs we read and listen to. Eventually, these poetry and figurative language skills will tie into the novel when the poem Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost, a literary allusion in the novel, is discussed.
Students in Mrs. Lesko's class joined the Iron Giraffe Challenge as a literary tie-in to the last novel the read, A Long Walk to Water. They are raising money for the non-profit Water for South Sudan. For more information on the fundraiser: Pictures with the Bunny. For more information about the challenge: Iron Giraffe Challenge.
8th-Grade students have a fun-filled 4th quarter coming!
It's time for some poetry! Students will study various elements of poetic structures as they study classic poems and create their own.
They will spend most of their time working in book clubs to read a novel together. The school has several options they can read, but book clubs can choose to get their own book to read. All books must be approved by their classroom teacher.
The word play this quarter focuses on analogies. Students will expand their vocabulary as they examine the relationships between words.
Their final i-Ready Diagnostic is coming in the middle of April. We hope the students celebrate the end of i-Ready by achieving their best score yet!
