A Message from the Superintendent: Summer Reading for District 25 Families
Dear Parents,
As we approach the summer break, we want to take a moment to discuss an important topic: summer reading loss. Research shows that many students experience a decline in reading skills over the summer months when they are not actively engaged in reading and literacy activities. This phenomenon, often referred to as "summer slide," can impact academic progress and achievement when students return to school in the fall.
Summer reading loss occurs when children do not continue to read regularly during the break. Without consistent practice, their reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary development can stagnate or decline. As educators, we are committed to supporting your child's academic growth throughout the year, and we believe that maintaining a reading routine over the summer is crucial for their continued success. Below is a link to our District 25 folder with amazing resources and lists of reading books on each grade to best support our District 25 families in summer reading:
Here are some key reasons why summer reading is important:
Skill Retention: Reading regularly helps children retain the reading skills they have developed during the school year. It reinforces their ability to decode words, comprehend texts, and build vocabulary.
Academic Performance: Students who read during the summer typically perform better academically when they return to school. They are better prepared to tackle new material and are more likely to succeed in their studies.
Love for Learning: Summer reading can foster a lifelong love for learning and exploration. It introduces children to new ideas, cultures, and experiences through books, sparking their curiosity and imagination.
Parental Involvement: Reading together as a family can strengthen bonds and create positive associations with reading. Your encouragement and support play a critical role in motivating your child to read over the summer.
To support your child's reading journey this summer, we encourage you to:
Set Aside Time: Designate a consistent time each day for reading. Whether it's in the morning, afternoon, or evening, establishing a routine helps reinforce the habit of reading.
Visit the Library: Take advantage of your local library's summer reading programs and resources. Librarians can recommend books that match your child's interests and reading level.
Create a Reading List: Involve your child in selecting books that they are excited to read. Consider a mix of fiction, non-fiction, and genres they enjoy to keep them engaged.
Lead by Example: Let your child see you reading for pleasure. Show them that reading is a valuable and enjoyable activity for people of all ages.
Together, we can prevent summer reading loss and ensure that your child continues to grow as a confident and capable reader. We are here to support you every step of the way and look forward to seeing your child's reading progress when they return to school in the fall.
Warm regards,
Dr. Michael Dantona
