Lathe Setup
Haas Video: set lathe offsets
Tool Offsets
Load stock
Check concentricity visually
Use MDI Program S250 M03
For each tool:
Set X-Offset manually
Start lathe, manually turn a light cut in X direction
Stop lathe, measure diameter of part with vernier caliper
Tool Offset -> X Diam Measure
Measure actual diameter using a micrometer
Enter diameter measurement in prompt
Set Z-Offset manually
start lathe, take light facing cut, stop lathe
Tool Offset --> Z Face Measure
Inspect
MDI Mod1,2,3 block with g-code
Make a part, measure, and adjust as needed.
Work Offset
Use zero for X and Z if your G54 origin corresponds to where you touched off the tool
Tailstock
Use tailstock & live center when unsupported length / diameter > 3
Tailstock Use
Good video: How to use the Tailstock on a Haas Lathe
Suggested starting tailstock pressure should be 200 psi.
*Additional support needed if unsupported length / diameter > 10
Live Center
The Live Center is a high performance bearing that sits in the quill and is advanced hydraulically to engage a previously drilled small hole.
Use a 60' center drill to drill a shallow hole to receive the live center
Be extra careful with all positioning commands near the live center.
Stay above diameter 0.4390 and don't go more than Z +0.030 or you will damage the live center
Soft Jaws
Goal is 1/3 of the part length secured in the jaws
