'The Countess'-Constance Markievicz
Constance Markievicz (1868-1927), also known as Countess Markievicz, was a committed suffragist, socialist and labor activist, with a body of writing that testifies to the gravity of her political agenda.
Above all, she was a militant activist, an armed revolutionary ready to carry out the quest for justice & equity no matter the costs.
As one historian stated, "Her memory feeds into a much larger history about the uses and abuses of women and women's history for the purposes of the masculinized nation."*
What makes Constance so cool? Here's some of her accomplishments:
took part in the 1916Easter Rising as a full fledged officer
although she was once spared the death penalty due to her sex, Markievicz was a feminist and contributed greatly to the feminist movement in Ireland
first Irish women elected to parliament, serving as Minister of Labor 1919-1922
