Sacajawea (1788-1812), was a Native American women of the Lemhi Shohone tribe. She is rememberd today as the guide to the Lewis and Clark exibition, the exibition that is responsible for exploring and mapping the western United States, paving the way for centuries of expansion.
Her guideance was crucial in the expidition. She acted as not just a naviagtor, but a translator and negotiator between the expedition and the many Native tribes they encounterd. Were it not for her, they likley would have never made it.
Facts: She was kidnapped by the Hidatsa tribe when she was 12, only reuniting with her family during the expedition. She went on the journey while caring for her 2 month old child. She was especially good freinds with Clark, who became the legal guardian to her children after her death.
