What is Working Memory?

Working memory is the process of our brain that enables us to hold information temporarily in order to use it. It is an important skill needed for reasoning, planning, making decisions and displaying appropriate behavior. Without this function simple decisions like what to eat, what to wear or what game to play would take forever. We use this function to complete everyday tasks such as remembering the name of a person you just met, calculating the total bill of your Target run while shopping, or keeping a person's address in mind while you are given directions.

Working memory follows four basic components:

  1. It allows us to store current experiences and new information.

  2. It allows us to access and use prior knowledge.

  3. It allows us to compare and connect new experiences and knowledge with the old.

  4. It allows us to use this new and old information to accomplish the current tasks.
