What is Cognitive Flexibility?

Cognitive flexibility refers to the mind and its ability to modify and adapt when faced with a problem or challenge. It is all about being able to look at a situation in a new or different way in order to reach a goal. It is quickly adapting to any change in schedule or circumstance. If someone has strong cognitive flexibility skills they can easily shift their perspective or approach when their original approach is not successful. A child needs to learn how to adapt to the world around them as it is a piece of their everyday life at home and at school. At school a child will have to comply with teacher expectations for academic demands and behaviors, interacting with peers appropriately and make the right choices when faced with temptation during unsupervised time. As educators, we often blame the student when they are not grasping a concept quickly. What if, instead, we to use our own cognitive flexibility and considered what we could do differently to better support the student? We could consider how to present the material differently or what extra supports to add in order for the child to succeed.
