All work is due during class!
Missing Assignments: Work that was never submitted
Late Assignments: Work submitted after the due date
Excused Assignments: Work that receives an extended due date because of an approved school absence. The assignment is still required, but is not considered late if submitted by the new due date.
Exempt Assignments: Work that is excused, but is part of a classroom activity that cannot reasonably be completed after an absence or replaced with an alternate assignment
Work that was never submitted
Assignments classsified as missing recieve a zero in the gradebook. In addition, redo privileges for these assignments are immediately revoked. Students with missing or late assignments are consistently the students most likely to earn low grades or fail this class.
Work submitted after the due date
Missing assignments that are eventually submitted can be classied as late work, and are handled differently than assignments submitted on time:
1. Late assignments must be completed in full. Unlike regular assignments and redos, partial credit is not accepted. The entire assignment must be completed before it will be accepted for grading.
2. Late assignments are graded differently. Instead of receiving an independent assignment score, each late assignment is assigned the student's unit average score (exam and other unit work combined). This is not a grade penalty. However, unlike work submitted on time, late assignments cannot improve a student's unit average by offsetting mistakes made on the unit exam.
Work that receives an extended due date because of an approved school absence. The assignment is still required, but is not considered late if submitted by the new due date.
College View Academy follows a one-to-one plus one day policy for excused absences. Students have the number of days they were absent, plus one additional day, to complete excused assignments.
Communication is important. If you need additional time, talk with the teacher before the deadline. Additional time may be granted when appropriate, but it is not automatic.
To receive excused assignment status, you must complete an additional step. When submitting your work in Google Classroom, type "Excused Absence" in the assignment comment. This notifies the teacher to check your attendance record. If your absence is confirmed as excused, the assignment will be classified as an Excused Assignment, graded exactly like an on-time assignment, and granted all normal redo privileges.
Work that is excused, but is part of a classroom activity that cannot reasonably be completed after an absence or replaced with an alternate assignment
Occasionally, a student with an approved school absence will miss a classroom activity that cannot reasonably be completed later or replaced with an alternate assignment. In these cases, the assignment is marked Exempt.
To process this correctly, locate the assignment in Google Classroom and type “Excused Absence” in the comment field. This notifies the teacher to check your attendance record.
Once the absence is confirmed as excused, the assignment will be classified as an Exempt Assignment and removed from the student's grade.
