Our Writers’ Workshop program, Writers’ Workshop Units of Study by Lucy Calkins, will focus on narrative, information, and opinion writing. Grammar will be taught utilizing the adopted Schoolwide Grammar as well as Mastering the Mechanics. We will also practice letter writing and poetry.
I've included the grading rubrics that I'll use for each trimester. Keep in mind a grade 1 = not meeting standards, grade 2 = meeting standards, and grade 3 = exceeds grade level standards.
Word Study
We will use a comprehensive word study curriculum called Fundations. This program is a systematic approach to teaching foundational skills and includes phonemic awareness, phonics, word study, high frequency words, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension strategies, handwriting, and spelling. In addition to Fundations I will be using Words their Way to further enhance our word study program and provide differentiated instruction.
The curriculum focuses on concepts and skills addressed across the four program Levels including:
Reading/beginning reading skills and strategies
Vocabulary development
Fluency
Comprehension (listening and written) strategies
Writing skills and conventions
Reader's Workshop
This includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing. We will use the adopted Schoolwide Reading Units for Reading. Readers’ Workshop is direct instruction on comprehension strategies through read aloud and discussions. In addition, students will spend time choosing their own books to read independently each day and will and will conference with the teacher to meet student goals. We will use the Daily 5 method for our small group reading center instruction. To teach comprehension strategies, we use the Lori Oczkus Reciprocal Teaching Strategies; Predicting, Questioning, Inferring, & Summarizing. Click below for more information and helpful links.
