Why Chabot has had a musical/drama program for 44+ years
The program initially was started outside of Chabot at Title 1 schools to provide an non academical outlet for students. Anecdotally, it became evident that students who were previously challenged in making friends or exhibited high behavioral issues within the classroom were changing. By being part of a different type of team, along with a the outlet acting (and or singing depending on their part) they gained confidence and were viewed in a more positive way by their peers.
After several years it was also noted that test scores increased each year of the program on a consistent basis. As some of these program teachers moved to non Title 1 schools, taking the program with them, test scores also increased at these schools as well.
The Chabot drama and musical program provides growth opportunities for all varieties of learners. For example, kinesthetic learners engage their bodies through dance, linguistic learners dive into the written and spoken word, spatial learners tackle set and costume design, and musical learners revel in the show’s score.
The Chabot program provides growth opportunities for all varieties of learners. For example, kinesthetic learners engage their bodies through dance, linguistic learners dive into the written and spoken word, and spatial learners work with props. All these skills build a fun and memorable experience for cast members and audiences.
Other ways the program benefits our students:
Self-Confidence: Throughout the rehearsal and performance process, students discover how to take creative and emotional risks and learn to trust their abilities.
Literacy: Students increase reading and writing skills at their own pace by immersing themselves in the story, reading and re-reading their scripts, memorizing their lines, and taking notes at rehearsal.
Communication: During rehearsals, students learn how to articulate their thoughts and questions and carefully listen to direction in order to improve their performances.
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: The amount of work required to successfully put on a show makes all participants valuable trouble shooters. Whether inventing mnemonics to remember lines or mastering a tricky scene change, students have countless opportunities to creatively tackle challenges.
Public Speaking: Whether performing for their peers during rehearsal or during a performance, students gain expertise and confidence speaking in front of a group.
Teamwork: Theater requires extensive creative input from all its participants. Students build ensemble by working together to rehearse, construct, promote, and perform their show. Every role – whether onstage or behind the scenes – is vital for the show’s success.
