Kindergarten Curriculum Highlights
Language Arts
Reading
Identify letter names (upper and lowercase)
Identify letter sounds
Orally blend simple words
Orally segment simple words into sounds
Recognize and produce rhyming words
Identify concepts of print (e.g. Where do we start reading? Which direction do we read? What is the title? Who is the author?)
Use reading comprehension strategies (e.g. questioning, visualizing, predicting)
Retell stories, summarize, identify main events, beginning, middle, and end, problem, and solution.
Writing
Legibly write first name, capitalizing only the first letter
Use words from "word wall"
Communicate/tell a story through pictures/letters/phonetically spelled words
Write two simple coherent sentences using writing conventions (e.g. capitalization, punctuation, spacing)
Write in the following genres: narrative, information, and opinion
Mathematics
Count, recognize, and write numbers from 0-30
Skip counting, counting by 5s, 10s
Identify “more than, “less than”, and “equal to” using concrete objects
Identify, sort, and classify objects by attributes
Build simple patterns
Use measurement skills (e.g. length, weight)
Introduced to the concept of money (penny, nickel, and dime)
Demonstrate understanding of concepts of time (e.g. days of the week, yesterday/today/tomorrow, time to the nearest hour, months, seasons)
Identify 2d and 3d shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle, cube, sphere, cone, cylinder)
Simple addition and subtraction
Science
In addition to our Science curriculum, other units may include Harvest, Nocturnal Animals, Snowflakes, The Rainforest, Butterflies, The Ocean, The Garden, Farm Animals, and Seasons.
Social Studies
Our Social Studies curriculum is from Scott Foresman. We will focus on developing social skills like cooperation, sharing, working in small groups/partners, building a community, and making good choices. We will study about important historians, holidays, and maps. Multicultural understanding and celebrations around the world will also be a part of social studies.
Music
Overall music is also integrated into the daily curriculum. In addition, students will attend a weekly music class led by a music teacher.
Art
Art is also integrated in many areas of the curriculum using a variety of media to expand skills and appreciation.
