In this course, students read a variety of texts from the myPerspectives textbook, such as Romeo and Juliet and excerpts from The Odyssey. Every student receives their own copy that they can write in and the book does not need to be returned.
During Fall semester, we read the novella The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. Students analyze the main character's growth and developing identity, and use the book as inspiration to reflect on their own identity in vignettes and a narrative essay.
During Spring semester, students complete the Freshman College Project, during which they learn about the various options available to them after graduation and what they can do to prepare starting in 9th grade. This project normally also includes a field trip to a local university.
