What good is a bone-dry well?
The Lord brought you to me and said,
“Drink.”
And you did:
You drank every last drop I had to offer.
You were even ready to dig deeper for more,
Until you realized that it is easier to find a new well to draw from.
When I was worth the walk
To quench and satisfy your thirst,
I echoed all your dreams and swallowed the secrets you whispered.
I reflected the thing you loved most,
So lost in your visage that I never noticed you never wanted me for me,
But for what I could offer...
Until I had no more left to give.
You stayed until the last puddle was gone,
Because even that thin surface could mirror your face.
The face of a modern Narcissus:
Walking away from his greatest blessing
While leaving me entirely desiccated and never again visited
Even in thought...
For why would Narcissus think of the old bone-dry well
With a new one before him to exhaust
Until it is easier to find a fresh and full one?
