Think like an Artist
One of the biggest challenges students face when they walk into my art room is that I want them to learn how to "think like an artist. " Art has many variables, with materials, processes, procedures, and with the people creating it. Thinking like an artist is more about the process of working through a problem, experimenting with materials, brainstorming a project idea, or looking at art history, than it is about the final product. Having amazing finished pieces is fabulous, but what was learned along the way is more relevant to the student learning experience.
Thinking like an artist is about using the 4 C's of 21st Century thinking~ critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication. It's also about making a plan, trying it out, in-progress evaluations, making modifications, trying again when the plan fails, and deadlines. It's having an open mind and the willingness to try something new even if you are unsure of the outcome. Thinking like an artist is not limited to the confines of the art room, it's also a highly desirable trait in the modern workplace.
To quote Bob Ross,
"There are no mistakes in Art....just happy accidents!"
I would also like to thank all of the students past and present who have and will cross the threshold into my art room. You are the reason I keep coming back to the classroom, day after day, year after year. I do the things that I do to make it a more rewarding experience for you.
As a very wise man once said, "Some days chickens, some days feathers".
