Book: If I Stay

Author: Gayle Forman

AR Points: 8.0

Review: If you had to choose between life and death what would you choose? For seventeen-year-old Mia, this question had been bouncing back and forth in her head ever since she realized she was outside of her body. For a second she thought she had her decision made, there was nothing left for her here on earth. Her younger brother, Teddy, and her parents had died in the crash that morning, the same crash that had Mia in a coma. Mia understood this and couldn’t grasp the reality that if she wakes up she will be an orphan. As mia lay still in the hospital hooked up to machines that were keeping her heart pumping she had a couple of visitors which included Kim and Adam. Kim is Mia’s best friend and Adam is her loving boyfriend. They want Mia to stay, they want to let her know that she still had a family who will be here for her. Then her Gramps walked In and whispered in Mia’s ear that it is okay to say goodbye and that Mia shouldn’t be scared. With so much to think about Mia wonders if she could make it through if she were to wake up or should she just let death consume her? I think this book was an interesting read. In the story, it bounces back from Mia’s past and present and all the situations that lead up to this moment of her life. Mia wonders if these memories were good enough and whether or not she lived a successful life and if it was time to let go. This makes you as a reader ask yourself if you have been living to your own best ability. Gayle Forman has a really good way of making the reader see how the characters all relate to Mia and how and why their emotions are so strong.

Book: Everything, Everything

Author: Nicola Yoon

AR Points: 7.0

Review:

This book is about a girl named Madeline who suffers from a disease called SCID. This disease doesn’t allow Madeline to leave her house because she would need to be hospitalized. The only people she socializes with are her mother and her nurse, Carla. However, everything changes when she sees her new neighbor, Olly, for the first time. All of a sudden, she finds herself talking to him through text messages and emails. Madeleine starts opening up to Olly about how she feels trapped living with SCID, she would sometimes find herself daydreaming about what the outside world would be like and fantasized about the place she wanted to visit the most, The beach. Olly is willing to bring the beach to her but Madeleine wants more, will she risk her health in order to go on an adventure with Olly? I would describe this book as a typical romantic teen love story and would highly recommend if you are into romance. Nicola Yoon does a great job showing the love that Olly and Madeline have for each other and how they would actually do anything for one another but not only does the author show the love between Madeline and Olly but also the love between Madeline and her mom. This book gives you such a heartwarming feel that all you can manage to do is smile and all I can say is, “well done Nicola Yoon.”
