Description

This hands-on, action-oriented Faculty Learning Community will explore intersectional strengths and needs of students experiencing complex and overlapping challenges, which may include food and housing insecurity, disability, physical or mental health conditions, family obligations, and more. The FLC will do this through analysis of data from a two-year grant on student success, with a special focus on data related to faculty-student interactions. The data is from The Pioneers for HOPE Learning Framework, a two-year project funded by the Stupski Foundation to investigate and identify strategies that support underserved and under-resourced students to make academic progress and complete their degrees. Purpose

This FLC will engage faculty in exploring such questions such as:

• In looking at the data collected in the first year of the study, how have faculty responded positively to support diverse students experiencing challenges, and what are potential areas for faculty development?
• How can faculty grow in their capacity to teach and mentor students experiencing challenges while maintaining work-life balance?
• How can trainings on these issues be made accessible to all faculty?

Activities

• Analyze qualitative data in Dedoose, a cloud-based software program designed for teamwork
• Co-author a paper based on our analysis
• Brainstorm about ways to reach as many faculty as possible about how to support students experiencing complex and overlapping challenges
• Develop resources and tools for reaching faculty

Outcomes

• Manuscript for a peer-reviewed journal analyzing qualitative data on faculty-student interactions. (Data collected as part of a longitudinal mixed methods study completed from January-July 2018 with four waves of data; N=53 for Wave 1 and N=48 for Wave 4.)
• In-person trainings, online modules, podcasts, or other means of increasing faculty capacity to teach and mentor students experiencing complex and overlapping challenges. The specific format of trainings will be determined by FLC participants with an emphasis on accessibility and scalability of the trainings. We want to reach as many faculty as possible.

In particular, we may choose to have a couple of longer sessions to allow for data analysis and/or a writing retreat, and if so, we may remove one or more sessions.
