Academic preparation, educational equity, and the achievement gap are crucial campus concerns. Reaching and supporting the learning of first generation students, who comprise an increasing proportion of our students, is a key pedagogical concern. This FLC will explore how classroom practices and teaching strategies can help first-generation CSUEB students succeed. Faculty should be prepared to implement a new pedagogical practice that addresses the academic needs of first-generation students into one of their Spring 2019 courses.

Purpose

This FLC will provide peer mentorship and guidance for faculty as the plan and implement a new pedagogical practice in one of their Spring 2019 courses. In addition, the FLC will

• Serve as a resource for faculty seeking to support the success and retention of first generation students;
• Assist faculty in supporting and instructing first generation students inside and outside the classroom;
• Encourage discussion and support of scholarship on the topic first generation students and success.

Activities

• Plan a new pedagogical practice to be implemented in a Spring 2019 course.
• Implement that new pedagogical practice.
• Assess the outcome of that pedagogical practice.
• Mentor colleagues as they work through their own pedagogical changes.

Outcomes

• Plan for implementing a new pedagogical practice aimed at the academic needs of first-generation students.
• Evidence of the implementation of that plan.
• Assessment of the pedagogical change.
• Feedback for peers who are implementing their own pedagogical changes.
