Academics

Homework: There will not be required weekly homework in 2nd grade. We will send work as needed for review or if your child has not completed classwork. We encourage students to read and work on a math program for about 20 minutes each per day. We will also send home a workbook for additional math practice.

How can I help my child at home? Encourage your child to work on their math fluency. There will be several websites they can access through Schoology. For example, Fun 4 The Brain, ST Math, and Edmentum. Encourage your child to read 100 minutes a week!

Year at a Glance

Round Up: We are excited to have a scheduled campus-wide time for intervention and extension groups/activities. This time is called “Round Up”. During Round Up, teachers will provide targeted small group intervention and extension opportunities to promote student growth and overall academic success.

Round Up: 7:50-8:15 & 1:20-1:40

Recess: 12:45-1:15

Lunch: 12:08-12:44

Conference: 8:50-9:50

Snacks and Birthdays

This year our class will have a mid-morning snack before lunch. Parents are encouraged to send in a healthy snack daily. With an early start and a late lunch, a healthy snack will give your child the nutritional boost he/she needs during the day. Please keep in mind that snack time is only 10-15 minutes long. Do not send in anything that needs to be refrigerated. Here is a list of good snacks to consider: Pretzels, animal crackers, goldfish crackers, muffins, crackers, granola/cereal bars, fruit, carrot sticks, graham crackers, pop tarts

We love to celebrate birthdays with your child. If you would like to send a special birthday treat to share with the class, please be sure to leave it at the office by noon. The treat MUST be sealed and store bought. We will celebrate sometime in the afternoon. Parents may send birthday invitations to school to pass out, but only if there is one for every child in the class.

Field Trips

2nd grade typically goes on one field trip during the year: Mayborn Museum. More information and dates will come as we get closer to the field trip in the spring. 

Parent Conferences: October 10th is Parent Conference Day. Be looking for a sign-up from your child's teacher. If you need to meet with your child's teacher on another occasion, please email the teacher. 

Miscellaneous

• SHOES: Your child will need tennis shoes for P.E. and recess everyday. 

• WATER BOTTLES: Send a water bottle every day and make sure it is clearly labeled with your child's name. It is H-O-T outside!  

• FRIENDS AND FAMILY BOARD: We love to connect with our students. If they wish, they can bring in a picture for our friends and family board in our classroom. They will be returned at the end of the school year! 

• MUSTANG FOLDER: Mustang Folders come home every MONDAY. Please view them and return them the next day. We will not send home daily folders. Classroom concerns will be made on an as needed basis through email or phone call.
