CTE courses are offered in 7th & 8th grade. These are high school credit courses. They follow high school grading guidelines, such as having 70% Academic Achievement grades and 30% Academic Practice grades for each six-week grading period, and have final exams like all high school courses.
In CSISD, CTE courses are not calculated in local GPA; however, they are always included on your high school transcript, and many colleges and universities do calculate their own GPAs and would include these courses in their calculations.
TOUCH SYSTEM DATA ENTRY
semester-long course Required for all 7th-grade students
In Touch System Data Entry, students apply technical skills to address business applications of emerging technologies. Students enhance reading, writing, computing, communication, and reasoning skills and apply them to the business environment. Students will need to apply touch system data entry skills for production of business documents. This course may be taken through CSISD summer school if the course has sufficient enrollment (CTE credit)
PRINCIPLES OF LAW, PUBLIC SAFETY, CORRECTIONS, & SECURITY
year-long course
Principles of Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security introduces students to professions in law enforcement, protective services, corrections, firefighting, and emergency management services. Students will examine the roles and responsibilities of police, courts, corrections, private security, and protective agencies of fire and emergency services. The course provides students with an overview of the skills necessary for careers in law enforcement, fire service, protective services, and corrections. (CTE credit)
To continue this CTE Law Enforcement program of study once in high school, students may take Law Enforcement I, Criminal Investigations, Law Enforcement II, Forensic Science, and Practicum in Law.
PRINCIPLES OF APPLIED ENGINEERING
year-long course
Principles of Applied Engineering provides an overview of the various fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and their interrelationships. Students will develop engineering communication skills, which include computer graphics, modeling, and presentations, by using a variety of computer hardware and software applications to complete assignments and projects. Upon completing this course, students will understand the various fields of engineering and will be able to make informed career decisions. Further, students will have worked on a design team to develop a product or system. Students will use multiple software applications to prepare and present course assignments. (CTE credit)
To continue this CTE engineering program of study once in high school, students may take Introduction to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Robotics I & II, and Practicum in Manufacturing.
PRINCIPLES OF ARTS, AUDIO/VIDEO TECHNOLOGY, AND COMMUNICATIONS
year-long course
This course is for students interested in learning about photography, audio/video technology, digital influencing, graphic design, video game design, and fashion design. This course is designed with a hands-on approach and students will be introduced to the software relevant to these industries. (CTE credit)
To continue this CTE Design and Multimedia Arts program of study once in high school, students may choose to take courses in Graphic Design, or Audio/Video Production, or Video Game Design, or Animation (at College View High School).
PRINCIPLES OF EXERCISE SCIENCE & WELLNESS
year-long course Prerequisite: Must be in 8th grade; must be currently taking Athletics
The Principles of Exercise Science and Wellness course is designed to provide for the development of knowledge and skills in fields that assist patients with maintaining physical, mental, and emotional health. Students in this course will understand diet and exercise, as well as techniques to help patients recover from injury, illness, and disease. They will also learn about introductory health science topics such as employability skills, lifespan development, and ethical and legal standards. Students who take this course are ideally interested in such careers as physical therapy, athletic training, nutrition, personal training, and recreational therapy. The central focus of this course is to provide students with a solid foundation in the topics of health and wellness and increase their interest in the various careers available in these fields. To continue this CTE exercise science and wellness program of study once in high school, students may take Kinesiology I, Human Growth and Development, and Anatomy & Physiology. Students can also transition into the Health Science Diagnostic & Therapeutic Services program of study by taking Medical Terminology and then Health Science Theory.
PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATIONS
semester-long course
Professional Communications blends written, oral, and graphic communication in a career-based environment. This course requires individuals to be creative, a willingness to learn about computers, technology applications, and communication, both oral communication and written communication. This course gives the opportunity for students to explore colleges and careers that interest them. Students will collaborate on research-based projects, deliver speeches, and complete a final assessment for the course. (CTE credit)
WEB COMMUNICATIONS
semester-long course Required for all 8th-grade students
In Web Communications, students will acquire knowledge of web communications and technological operations and concepts. This is an exploratory course in web communications. The six strands include creativity and innovation; communication and collaboration; research and information fluency; critical thinking; problem-solving, and decision-making; digital citizenship; and technology operations and concepts. This course may be taken through CSISD summer school if the course has sufficient enrollment (CTE Credit)
