Texas High School VASE (Visual Art Scholastic Event) is a U.I.L. event hosted by Texas Art Educators Association (TAEA) since 1994. Students are selected locally to compete at the regional level. Our region's competition was held at Bryan High School this year on February 8th. The student submissions are categorized for competition by the number of semesters or years they have received high school art credit: Level 1 (less than a year), Level 2, Level, 3, and Level 4. Artwork is also separated for competition by 2D or 3D.

Each student must be present at the event to compete, and their artwork must have a record of the process plan, reference photographs, and image thumbnails. Their artwork must be original and meet VASE standards and guidelines as well to qualify for competition. The student individually presents their artwork before an art juror in a classroom. The student not only explains their technique, process, inspiration, and expression, but also answers questions from their judge. If a student receives a 4 (exemplary), then their artwork has potential to advance to state competition. From the collection of 4's, the art jurors collaborate and choose the artworks to advance to State VASE.
