I am this year's elected NHS President of the Crestwood High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. At the age of 11, I dedicated my summers to overseeing chess competitions and painting stations at Caroline Kennedy events targeted for the youth. This is where I first realized my deep-seated desire to give back to the tight-knit Dearborn Heights community that raised me. This passion for community service found a new outlet in joining Crestwoood’s National Honor Society. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside the Dearborn Heights Deputy Clerk to facilitate NHS student involvement in elections, work as a Student Watershed Commissioner to rehabilitate our city’s Rain Gardens, and help coordinate our school’s annual Pink Out and Blue Out events, aimed to fundraise for Breast Cancer Research and Angelman Syndrome research, respectively. This is just a small glimpse into the opportunities that NHS has opened for me, and to many of our other members. Besides NHS, I am involved in our school’s Robotics team, tennis team, and Student Congress as well as conducting research through our Science Club. In the future, I’m looking to major in electrical engineering and computer science!
Hello! My name is Noor El Fadl and I am serving as the vice president for our school’s 2024-2025 NHS Chapter. Since my freshman year, I have wanted to join the National Honor Society after being inspired by all of the wonderful things we have done for the community that has done so much for us. My sophomore year, I began volunteering for the National Honor Society as a potential member and decided that I wanted to be involved in NHS more than just a member, leading me to run for an officer position. What drew me specifically to the role of Vice President was the fact that they are responsible for the biannual Red Cross blood drive Crestwood hosts. Learning that one pint of blood helps save up to three lives is what inspired me to run for the position, especially as a future healthcare professional. Aside from NHS, I am the President of the Students Against Destructive Decisions club (SADD), a Dearborn Heights watershed commissioner, and the secretary of communications for Crestwood’s Science Club, where I also partake in GLOBE research. Overall, I try my best to be involved in our school community and our city and NHS continuously gives me opportunities to give back to both communities.
Hello! My name is Jana Ibrahim, and I am the Secretary of Crestwood’s National Honor Society. As NHS secretary, I keep track of attendance, agenda development and meeting minutes. I decided to run for this position after volunteering at one of the Hillcrest party events as a potential member. Watching the elementary kids have so much fun, I became motivated to take on a leadership role and make a difference within the community. Recently, I became a National Honor Society Marketing Ambassador, and I get to work with NHS officers nationwide. Aside from NHS, I am the President of Key Club, CAD lead of the robotics team, GLOBE researcher, and a Varsity Tennis player! Currently, I’m looking to pursue a career in the engineering field as I have always had a passion for STEM and Robotics.
Hello, my name is Kareem Fakih, and I am Treasurer of the National Honor Society of Crestwood High School. As Treasurer, I set up, manage, and oversee all fundraising efforts made by the organization. In doing so, we as an organization are able to fundraise for many charitable causes, such as aiding in Breast Cancer Awareness during the annual fall Pink Out and Angelman Syndrome Awareness during the annual spring Blue Out. I also organize and operate the weekly recycling efforts made by our school on Fridays. I decided to run for this position because even while volunteering as a potential member, I saw the many ways I could make a difference in the events I worked at and knew this was the way to make that difference. Aside from NHS, I am the President of Crestwood's Book Club, the Founder of Crestwood's Creative Writing Club, and the Founder of Crestwood's TED-ED Student Talks Club, among other clubs I regularly attend.
Hello! My name is Aya Soubra, and I am the Historian of the NHS Executive Board. It is my responsibility to help with all of our elementary schools’ events, like the Family Fun Nights. I also maintain the NHS Calendar that details the activities that NHS members have been involved with and upcoming events. I first became interested in NHS as a Freshman, I actively watched my Junior and Senior friends be presented great opportunities for service which inspired me to work toward becoming accepted into our CHS NHS Chapter. Then, I began volunteering for Hillcrest tutoring as a potential member, and my love for service only grew. It was very rewarding to see the impact that we as volunteers had on these students in such a short period of time. Outside of NHS, I am actively involved in other clubs including being the Key Club Bulletin Editor, Treasurer of Science Club, Class Officer for the Class of 2025, a Dearborn Heights watershed commissioner, and a member of Theatre. In the future, I plan to further my education to pursue a career in the medical field.
Hi! My name is Nour Abu Alaywa and for the 2024-2025 school year, I was elected as Parliamentarian. Throughout my time in NHS, I’ve loved attending environmentally focused events. From rain gardens to courtyard cleanups, I’ve always known I wanted to further my involvement in bettering our environment. However, my commitment to service extends beyond just our environment. I’ve always been a huge fan of elementary school events, where I’ve had the opportunity to connect with fellow NHS members and community members alike. My time in NHS has led me to form valuable relationships that have inspired me to continue pursuing community service and a commitment to volunteerism. Beyond NHS, I’m an active member of quiz bowl, GLOBE research, Crestwood’s swim team, and the Dearborn Heights Watershed Commission. I hope to bring positive change to our local environment, through my dedication and involvement in microplastics testing within the Rouge River and conducting courtyard cleanups. My research on microplastics has allowed me to gain valuable knowledge that I have applied to our courtyard cleanups. I’m hoping to ensure our Crestwood Courtyards are always well kept and visually appealing. I’m also dedicated to maintaining Crestwood’s status as an Evergreen School, ensuring environmental consciousness is always prioritized at Crestwood. I look forward to continuing my environmental activism and commitment to serving our community all throughout this school year and I’m thrilled to serve as parliamentarian!
For the 2024-2025 NHS Executive Board, I was elected as the Secretary of Communications. In this position, I am responsible for working closely with the deputy clerk to coordinate citywide elections, leading Adopt-a-Road events, and organizing rain garden clean-up events. When I first joined high school, I knew I wanted to become a member of NHS as I’ve seen its profound impact on its members. From becoming a member of this organization, I have gained invaluable lessons and a deeper understanding of what it means to be a part of a community, especially through volunteering. Some of my favorite events that I have volunteered for include city elections, tree lighting, and Canfield concerts. Through each one, I have seen firsthand just how impactful volunteering is. It not only allows us, the members, to give back to our community, but also gives us the privilege of forming relationships with individuals we wouldn’t meet every day- poll workers working alongside you at elections, fellow members of NHS, and even some political figures. Outside my role as NHS Secretary of Communications, I am also the class of 2025 treasurer, the vice president of Students Against Destructive Decisions, and a GLOBE researcher. For my future, I plan to further my education to pursue a career in medicine.
For the 2024-2025 NHS Executive Board, I was elected as Secretary of Service. In my role, I accurately log, mail, and award members’ service hours. I also organize and manage service events for Dearborn Heights Parks and Recreation. These events include Egg Drop, Spirit Festival, Canfield Concerts, City-Wide Garage Sale, and the Christmas Tree Lighting. Each one of these volunteering events follow a theme of building our community. Whether it is helping make each concert as enjoyable as can be or coordinating parking for 8,000 people, each event contributes to helping solve a community problem. With the compelling efforts of our NHS members, the Secretary of Service facilitates the NHS to achieve this ultimate goal of building our community. Other than my role as Secretary of Service, I am also a Key Club International Trustee, Electrical Lead for Crestwood’s Robotics Team, a GLOBE Researcher, and captain of the Cross Country team. In the future, I plan to further my education to major in biochemistry and later become a Pediatric Surgeon.
For the year 2024-2025 I was elected as secretary of social media. My role as an NHS officer is to post on our instagram about recent and upcoming events and to update the website regularly. I strive to help out more in our community and school, and to efficiently run our National Honor society events. Before becoming an officer i realized the great impact we have on our school district and community. Seeing how happy elementary kids were at field days and the lessons they learned from tutoring showed me our effect on people first hand. Being behind the scenes to see the effort and dedication put into planning NHS activities showed me the commitment we have for the crestwood NHS. This taught me lessons about having time management skills, and planning ahead which is key to success. Becoming a better flyer designer and learning how to navigate editing the website were also skills I learned. Communication between fellow officers is also very important in working to improve our organization. Besides NHS, I am also on the track and cross country team. I show involvement in other clubs in our school such as Key Club, GLOBE, and STUCO. In the future I want to pursue a career in medicine, specifically; a career in pediatrics.
For the 2024-2025 NHS Executive Board, I was elected as Secretary of Tutoring. This position involves coordinating and organizing all tutoring events throughout the school year and summer. I work with schools in the Crestwood District, such as Riverside Middle School and Hillcrest Elementary School, in order to ensure that students are receiving the help they need to succeed. Going into my junior year, I knew I wanted to be a part of the NHS Executive Board, but I wasn’t sure which position would be best suited for me. After reading the job description of each position and attending a variety of events, I quickly realized that tutoring is what I enjoy doing the most. I wanted to do more than just be a tutor though, so I decided to run for Secretary of Tutoring to be more involved in the process. Outside of my role in NHS, I am Secretary of Science Club, a GLOBE Researcher, an athlete on both Crestwood’s Track and Cross Country teams, and an active member of Key Club. Overall, I am a very active member of our school and community, and strive to carry that into my future. I hope to further my education and pursue a career in Law, bringing the values I learned through NHS and serving our community.
I currently teach 9th grade Biology.
As a Crestwood High School graduate, it feels great to be back here to teach in the community I grew up in. I graduated from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor with a Bachelor of Science in Education at the end of 2020 and began my first year teaching over Zoom! In fact, I was volunteering with Mrs. Johns at the Science and Engineering Fair of Detroit when the whole world began to shut down in March, 2020.
I have two siblings, both of whom are passionate about nursing. My older brother, Hassan, works as a nurse anesthetist at Beaumont-Grosse Pointe, and my younger sister, Yasmina, just began her second year of nursing school at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Having a brother and sister in STEM has led to many health and science conversations around the dinner table when everyone is home. I spend much of my spare time with my family, especially Yasmina. Now that she has moved to Ann Arbor for college, I spend most of my weekends driving to see her. We enjoy trying new recipes, reading books, shopping (with my credit card), and finding the best bubble tea places nearby!
I'm excited to work alongside Mrs. Johns this year to learn more about the close integration our National Honor Society (NHS) chapter has developed within our school and community. As a former member and president of Crestwood's NHS chapter, I'm proud to see its growth since I graduated. I look forward to inspiring our school's students to achieve their best and embody the four pillars of NHS.
My son Nathan and myself at Yosemite National Park in August, 2022.
I've had the honor and pleasure of teaching science at Crestwood High School for many years and it continues to be one of my life passions. I've served as Science Department Chairperson for quite some time so if you have questions about what pathway in high school science best suits your future goals, feel free to ask. My son's name is Nathan and his wife is Ngoc. Nathan graduated from Dearborn High and attended Michigan State University, Harvard, and just graduated with two Master Degrees and his PhD from Columbia University in May, 2019. I really don't mean to brag, but I'm pretty proud of Dr. Nathan Johns. He recently completed his postdoc at Stanford University in the Fischbach Lab focusing on microbial genomics and bioengineering. He is currently a researcher in the same lab. Dr. Ngoc Tran is an allergy and immunology physician at Stanford Medicine. My husband passed away in December, 2020 from COVID but was a professional forester and enjoyed all things outdoors. His passing has left a significant gap in our lives.
Student activities have been and continue to be an important part of my involvement at Crestwood High School and within the community . I am currently the co-adviser of the National Honor Society and I support GLOBE team science research through our Science Club. I've been the adviser of our Chapter's NHS since the 1992-1993 School year - that makes 32 years this school year! This demonstrates my passion to help build the leaders of tomorrow by providing positive service opportunities throughout high school.
