Who we are - Right now the Crestwood High School Chapter of the National Honor Society is 97 members strong. Membership in the National Honor Society membership is by invitation only and is an honor bestowed upon eligible CHS students. Established in 1921, the National Honor Society (NHS) is the oldest and most respected student recognition organization in the United States. Membership in NHS distinguishes students who have committed themselves to the pursuit of academic excellence, community improvement, and personal development.
More than an honor roll - Academic achievement is a core component of NHS, but today's students need much more than just good grades to get ahead. NHS’s focus on service, leadership, and character helps students build the skills and relationships that will ensure success throughout their academic years and beyond.

Our commitment - When NHS members participate in community service projects, attend local, state, and national leadership events, and serve as ambassadors to their schools and communities, they:
Connect with faculty, community leaders, and local businesses who can provide recommendations and references, as well as leads on future internships and jobs
Build a portfolio of life achievements that can be featured on applications for colleges and careers, as well as cover letters and resumes
Begin networking with other accomplished student leaders who are focused on personal growth and building a solid foundation for their future endeavors
Learn how to be a more effective leader, and why leadership skills are an essential tool at any stage of life
Make an impact, not just for himself or herself, but for the community and the world.
NHS membership should NOT be viewed as a resume add-on. Instead, membership is only meaningful if approached with a positive attitude. Our chapter provides an outstanding array of service opportunities that students can pick from. However, their NHS experience is only going to be significant and life-changing if they select their service opportunities with an eye to learn how to serve selflessly. NHS is only as beneficial as what your student does with the opportunities they are afforded. To really gain from the experience, members need to invest their time and best efforts so that NHS becomes a true representation of the positive young person they’ve developed into. You DON’T need NHS to get into the best schools. Colleges care about the dedication students develop to the activities they are involved in. If it is evident that your son or daughter took the easy path throughout their involvement in NHS, membership will be meaningless. On the other hand, if they learn that their efforts genuinely make a difference and are willing to profit from constructive criticism on how to be a person of good character – the experience can be an exemplary one.
Aim to make a difference! It isn't about how many hours of service you provide - it's more about the quality selfless service you provide to our schools and the community at large. We have a diverse amount of service opportunities available to students, choose wisely so that your personal talents will really make a difference.

Scholarships

Our chapter typically nominates 4 members to compete annually in the NASSP National Honor Society Scholarship Program. Members of the NHS vote on who will represent them in the competition. We have had three (3) national scholarship winners in the past! Farah Chammaa won in 2017, Ali Eter in 2019, Hayat Nachar in 2021, and Nour Kochaiche in 2022. Each of these individuals were awarded $3,200 for college. No other chapter in the U.S. has had so many scholarship winners in such quick succession!
Recently, in 2023 a staggering three members were awarded national scholarships! Omar Ahmad and Hady Salame were both recognized as Semi-Finalists and each received scholarships of $3,200. For the first time ever, we had a finalist in the scholarship competition and Savannah Jomaa earned a scholarship of $5,625.
In 2024 we again had three of our NHS members recognized by our parent organization NASSP. Maher Harp was honored as one of the only 24 NHS Scholarship Finalists from around the U.S. to win an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the NHS Trailblazing Leadership Week. Maher also Won a scholarship of $5,625. Isabella Jomaa and Mahdi Nassereddine were named NHS Scholarship Semi-Finalists. These members each earned scholarships worth $3,200 each.
Scholarship nominees are recognized in the induction program, given a commemorative plaque or trophy, and area awarded an NHS medallion to recognize their achievement.
Leadership opportunities
Students can attend leadership conferences and institutes that provide opportunities to learn or enhance leadership skills.
Our chapter has eight (8) elected officer positions where members can cultivate and grow their leadership skills
Our chapter also provides opportunities for general members to supervise, chair, and coordinate a variety of NHS sponsored activities.
Chapter activities and awards
Our chapter sponsors several activities each year to promote chapter unity and teamwork.
We earned a prestigious national award from our parent organization, NASSP in 2018. NHS members who assisted with our Blue Out were able to list this as one of their high school achievements.
Each year our organization develops a wide variety of school and community service projects specifically designed to give our members the opportunity to serve others. Service opportunities are available all year round for students to participate in.
NHS members have the opportunity to earn several service-based awards. These awards acknowledge service provided and can be listed on scholarship applications and college applications. Certificates and pins are provided for each award. Pins can be earned throughout a member's involvement in NHS and are suitable to be worn on the NHS sash during graduation. Currently over 50 awards can be earned.
College admission and financial aid planning
The National Honor Society national office now provides online options for students investigating college and university options including webinars, virtual events, and even scholarship searches.
NHS advisers have access to other college planning tools they can make available to members of the organization.
