I am glad that you are here! My name is Mrs. Amer. I have been a teacher for a long time. I have a Masters degree in Bilingual Bicultural Education, a Bachelors degree in Chemistry and major in Integrated Science and Secondary Education. I also have a minor in ESL. I was in the college of Pharmacy before I decided to go into Chemistry at WSU, I did my graduate degree in Secondary Education at EMU and went back to WSU for my M.Ed. I also worked on two different military operations contracts in Cairo, Egypt for both the Air Force and Army, where I worked as an engineer and training supervisor. Before I started teaching again I was a business development manager and was blessed to travel and see the world acquiring contracts and new business ventures. Yet I returned to teaching, so you're stuck with me and it will be my pleasure to help you reach your goals.
I have a gaming family which we all love video games. I have three kids, Sarah is an Operations Manager at Amazon, Youssef is a Middle School science teacher, and Andrew is in HS. My husband and I even used to run video game tournaments and we are a family of gamers!
If you want to know more about me just ask, I have had a wonderful and adventure filled life and will be happy to share my knowledge and experience with you. I also teach many other sciences, so I hope you will continue taking more elective science classes.
I believe that teachers are the leaders of society and the facilitators of learning. They play a critical role in motivating students and encouraging them to achieve their goals. Teachers through their career impact not only the individual, but the society as a whole. They help students develop a love and respect for themselves, others and their environment. They are the ones who motivate students, make teaching fun and enhance creative thinking and problem solving skills.
As an educator, I believe that each student is a unique individual who needs a safe and appropriate environment to grow emotionally, physically and socially. It is my job as an educator to help students satisfy their needs by creating an environment that is appropriate for learning, growing and sharing ideas. As a science teacher, I consider teaching to be more meaningful when it is focused on teaching students how to think and use their critical thinking skills and problem solving strategies to explore the world around them and solve the real life problems that they might face. I also believe that teachers are learners at the same time. They are always learning about their students and thinking of implementing new strategies, techniques and activities to improve students' learning and enhance their comprehension. I also believe that great teachers are the ones who believe in their students, never give up on them and keep trying the best to improve their learning. Good teachers are role models for their students, they are always well prepared, organized and ready to use as many strategies as they could to teach and reach every single student in the classroom.
Chemistry is a unique branch of science which studies the way atoms and energy interacting with each other to create everything around us. Chemistry can be viewed as one of the tougher branches of science since atoms are so small that they cannot be seen, even with the most powerful microscope. Therefore we discover through experimentation!
AP Chemistry is your first college chemistry course. It is somewhat of a survey of many facets of the subject. Many of our units can be specialized in solely if you really enjoy them. While it is true that this class is difficult no matter where you take it, our aim is to set you up for success in college. For many of you this may be earning college credit for the class and others of you, it will be to do exceedingly well when you take the course as a freshmen in college. Either way I want to see you succeed in whatever pathway you should choose in the future.
I look forward to exploring the world around us from a different angle and teaching you some cool stuff along the way!
What are the prerequisites?
Due to the difficult nature of this course, it is best if you have taken College Prep Chemistry and have earned an A or B, or have gotten Mr. Hren's thumbs up on taking the course. If you have not taken CP Chemistry, if you have earned an A in Chemistry A and B or gotten your chemistry teachers approval, you should be ready for this class!
I will be communicating with you this trimester using the following tools:
Be sure to check your email at the beginning of the school day and at the end of the school day. You will receive google notifications through email and I may send you a personal note this way.
I will use the google classroom to send out your weekly assignment schedule, assignments, and schedule google meets.
If you have not already gotten an invitation to join google classroom, the codes are as follows:
I will use Remind to send you reminders throughout the week about class or school information.
We will be conducting our daily class virtual meetings using Google meet. Check the bottom of this page to access the google meet for your schedules hour. You only need to click on the link to get to the meeting. The link is also posted on your google classroom mainstream page.
We will be using Jamboard to post daily Warm-ups and Exit tickets for formative assessments. Jamboard makes learning visible and accessible to all collaborators on the jam session.
I will share a jam link with you when we use it in class.
You will be using google slides to create your online student portfolio and showcase your work for Physics A throughout the trimester
We will be using google forms for Quizzes, self and peer evaluations, tests and online surveys.
We will be using Ap Classroom for practicing questions for each unit, quizzes and checking for understanding
Ask for help AS SOON AS YOU NEED IT!
Attendance will be taken at the weekly virtual face to face meetings via Google Meet.
During these virtual meetings, it is expected that you...
Log in 5 minutes early to make sure that you are ready to go when the meeting starts.
Be in a quiet room, do not sit on your bed.
Be dressed aproperiately for school and have your video turned on.
Mute your microphone if you are not speaking. Wait for me to call on you to unmute your microphone.
Come prepared to the meeting. Make sure to have your materials ready and a pen/paper to take notes if needed.
Be sure to complete the lessons before the meeting so you can be an active participtant in the meeting. Remember, this is one of the ways that you will be assessed if you have learned the standards.
Your health is the most important thing! Please email me to let me know what is going on. I am always willing to work with you. If you are sick, then take care of you first! When you are feeling better, start working on the lessons where you left off to catch up with the class. Email me to schedule a one-on-one time to meet so I can help answer any questions and you can demonstrate mastery of the standards that you missed.
Things are understandably different now, so we need to shift how we do things, and that includes learning.
What you learn in AP Chemistry will be the same as students in the past, but HOW you will learn it will be different. I am excited about the new possibilities to teach you how chemistry makes everything around us!
Here are some study tips when switching to online learning:
Develop a schedule and STICK TO IT! Get up at the same time every day, eat a good breakfast, and get to work. You will feel more accomplished if you complete your tasks early in the day instead of waiting for the evening. A schedule includes a regular bedtime. We all know that high school students need their sleep! Most teenagers need 8-10 hours of sleep each night. A consistent bedtime and wake time will help you immensely.
Create a space in your house to keep all of your school work organized. Make sure that you have a central calendar that you mark all of the assignments on so you do not lose track of due dates. You should write down your work that needs to be completed as soon as you receive the weekly schedule from your teacher.
Check your email each day. A lot of communication will be coming to you through email. Delete anything that you do not need and flag important emails so they do not get lost. At the end of the week, look through the emails that you received and clear out anything you do not need so you are ready for the next week's work.
Ask for help AS SOON AS YOU NEED IT! I am available during school hours to set up a one-on-one google meet with you to help with any issues that you may be having. Physics concepts build on one another and it is best to ask for help early because the concept will not be going away. We will just be adding to it in future chapters.
Keep up with the assignments. Make sure you are constantly looking at your calendar and crossing off items as you complete them. Make sure you start assignments a few days before they are due so you have time to ask questions before things are late. Again, physics concepts build on one another and it is best learned in small chunks, not all at once.
When things get crazy, take a deep breath. Let your teachers know that you are overwhelmed. They will help you walk through individual steps and break things down into managable chunks. Keep at it. Online learning will take some time to get used to, but when you find your groove, everything will fall into place.
Remember, you are not alone in this! There are many people waiting to help you succeed! You just have to communicate with your teacher!
