"In the most recent Arizona Youth Survey from 2022, 9.7% of high schoolers in Arizona said they had been threatened or injured with a knife, gun or other weapon at school in the past year." - ABC 15Â
School violence is mainly bad behavior that occurs on school campus such as bullying, physical fights, threats, weapon use, and emotional abuse. It can deeply affect the school community by causing fear, stress, and trauma, which may lead to anxiety, depression, and mental health. School violence can create an unsafe environment, and impact a student’s emotional and social development. Â
Federal laws have been recently focusing on security funding, civil rights and weapon prohibitions. For example all through Phoenix Union High School districts send information to parents about them safely storing firearms but it hasn't been working, Arizona still has the 3rd most dangerous schools in the U.S.
 Â
"Research shows that 22.6% percent of youth in grades nine through 12 report being in a physical fight within last year."
The ones that are affected by school violence are the students, parents, and teachers. The students are affected because they can get hurt and disturb the others learning. Teachers are affected because they have to get involved and stop it and lose time that they could have taught something. Parents are affected because they get worried for their kids and get scared something could happen to them. People shouldn't need to worry about if something happens at the school
Maryvale High School for an example, should stop violence in their school because the Arizona law mandates that a school districts needs to hold students accountable for issues. https://www.azleg.gov/ars/15/00341.htm
We recently interviewed a student from Maryvale concerning the recent stabbing, they stated, “A boy was stabbed at my school,” “My sophomore year there were a lot of fights.” Also that they thought school violence was a very huge problem in the community and that we should educate children about school violence.
Some consequences about school violence is they can cause students anxiety, depression, and trauma. Some long term impacts is mental health struggles and academic decline. School violence can also cause fights upon students which then creates physical violence and then causes fear and injuries.Â
School Violence can happen in or out of school. For example like walking to school or walking to class, or anytime in school. It could be a teacher or a classmate, you would never know it could be your best friend. School violence could occur by getting bullied, harassed, and ect. People might bully smaller people than them because they think they are better than them. It happens more often than you think, it could happen to everyone. "Every month, bullying affects one pupil in three." - UNESCOÂ
The government should care about school violence because Arizona schools are funded by the government Also, the schools don't do anything about bullying or gun violence. The government is supposed to protect schools. Currently the schools aren't protecting anyone so that leads to the government needing to do something about the issue. So, now the schools don't do anything about bullying or gun violence. Which is a big concern because many kids could be harmed by gun violence.Â
