Therapy and counseling has many advantages, some reasons being it can help prevent violence before it starts. Therapist and counselors are trained for the types of situations for school violence, according to ,Capella University, "In addition to specific duties as outlined in the school’s crisis response plan, counselors can help students directly or indirectly affected by the situation as they process their reactions to the event." Counselors can also help if an event occurs. "Afterward, the goal would be for every student to meet with a school counselor or ‘crisis responder’ even if it’s just for a brief assessment,” Stanley says." What this shows is that counselors can help students when a situation happens and they are scared or panicked.
We choose therapy and counseling as one of our policies because it's a safe and a good way to help students better manage their emotions which can help improve school violence. Another reason is counselors can make students feel safe leading to them opening up on their problems, according to America counselor association it demonstrates, "When students can identify at least one trusted adult within school, they feel better connected to the school environment and may feel comfortable sharing any concerns related to safety." This mentions that if they can open up on someone it can stop violence or get help to the person that needs help.
According to counseling.online.wfu.edu it states, "School counselors can also help students identify and address their needs and any challenges they may be experiencing before they become significant problems." This demonstrates that school counselors can prevent violence before it happens. Another example is according to National Library of Medicine it states, "Early identification and treatment of traumatized children can prevent these potentially serious and long-term negative outcomes." This mthat if they can treat the problem before it starts then there won't be any harm and long term effects in schools or to students.
Therapy and counseling can be a disadvantage for many reasons, it may not improve mental health and it takes attention from those that need it. According to the site Manhattan Institute it mentions, "Rigorous evaluations of universal programs on mental health literacy, awareness, prevention, and screening—and of many social-emotional learning programs—find neither reduced rates of mental health conditions nor improved academic outcomes." This states that they found that therapy and counseling may not improve mental health. The last reason is that it takes away from those that need the help more, according to, Manhattan Institute it mentions, "As the focus of U.S. mental health policy has shifted away from providing access to care for those with existing cases of mental illness, and toward prevention and early intervention, the role that schools have come to play as an informal part of the mental health system has expanded even beyond the requirements of IDEA." This shows that by having mental health focuse on school makes them pay less attention to those who need it.
