5 Great Games to play as a Family

By: Sami Friedman-Wellisch

  1. Say Something - There is a judge who picks the question and everyone writes answers on whiteboards. The judge then picks their favorite and all other players guess which they picked. People get points by guessing the correct choice or writing the answer that the judge picked.

  2. Telestrations - Players start by picking a card and writing down one of the words. Then they proceed by drawing the word as a picture. Once the drawing is finished, pass the drawing to the person next to you. They then guess what the word is, and pass it. Keep passing it, alternating guessing words and drawing. When the book gets back to its original place, players can look and share how it went.

  3. Headbanz - Players put a card that they wear with a headband on their head. The game comes in a set with cards that are objects, plants, or animals that most people would know about. Players take turns asking yes or no questions to see who can guess their card first.

  4. Heads Up - There is an app that people can get on either a phone or iPad that people can download to play the game. People pick a category and then a word will appear on the screen. The person holding the phone must put it against their forehead and then when the words come up, everyone else has to try to explain what word it is so that the person holding the phone can guess it. The goal of the game is to guess as many words as possible before the time runs out.

  5. Apples to Apples - Apples to Apples is a game in which there is a judge with a question and each player has to put in the answer they think is the best. However, the players only get seven answer cards, and they have to choose which of their seven is the best, even if they are unrelated.

Board Games Recommendations

  1. Dominion:

    • Length: 30-60 min.

    • 2-4 players.

    • Complexity: Low.

    • In Dominion, players rule a medieval kingdom. Each kingdom is represented by a deck of cards, which grows and changes throughout the game. Each player starts with the same basic cards, but “buys” cards from a Market of 10 stacks of cards using treasure cards in their deck. Each game is different, as you can choose which 10 cards to use each time. The game also has expansions, which add interesting new elements to the mix.

  1. Stone Age:

    • Length: 60-90 min.

    • 2-4 Players.

    • Complexity: Medium

    • In Stone Age, players control a small tribe of primitive humans. In the game, players assign different tasks to their figures, trying to do as much as they can with a limited number of figures. There are ways to get more throughout the game, but you have to be able to feed them…

  1. Terraforming Mars:

    • Length: 60-90 min.

    • 1-5 Players.

    • Complexity: High

    • In the future, players are one of many corporations working to make Mars habitable for humans. In this extremely scientifically-accurate game, they work together to terraform Mars, while competing to get the most points while doing it.

  1. Tigris and Euphrates:

    • Length: 90-120 min.

    • 2-4 players.

    • Complexity: Medium

    • Traveling back in time, players assume the role of an ancient Sumerian emperor, vying for supremacy in Mesopotamia. In this tile-placing game, they attempt to conquer large swaths of land, build monuments, and strategically place their different-colored tiles.

  1. Terra Mystica:

    • Length: 90-150 min.

    • 2-6 players.

    • Complexity: High

    • In Terra Mystica, players control races of magical, fantastical, and even monstrous creatures, trying to rule a continent. Each group can only settle on and travel through a certain terrain, so they employ various methods of transforming other terrains. Players cannot take over areas that are already colonized, so the game is a race to become the most powerful with limited resources.

  1. Evolution:

    • Length: 60-120 min.

    • 2-6 Players.

    • Complexity: Medium

    • In this game, each player controls several species, which they improve and change throughout the game. Players must be clever to let their species thrive while being careful not to upset the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

  1. 7 Wonders:

    • Length: 30-45 min.

    • 3-7 Players.

    • Complexity: Low

    • In this card game, each player tries to build a civilization over three phases. To do so, they scramble for the cards they want as hands are passed around between players. Each card interacts with other cards differently, and there are many ways to win. This game is remarkably simple and quick, and is a great game for those folks who are unsettled by long playing times or 20-page rulebooks.

  1. Codenames

    • Length: 10-20 min.

    • 4-12 players.

    • Complexity: Low

    • In this quick, easy word game, players separate into two teams. On each team, a “Codemaster” connects words with clever clues, trying to get their team to guess them. Each game is extremely short, and teams can be switched up between games, so Codenames is the perfect party game.

Now that we’re stuck indoors, it’s time to try something new! I’ve recently had an interest in making collages. It’s super fun and very easy.

All you need are:

  • Papers/ empty notebook

  • Magazines

  • Scissors

  • Glue

  • Tape (clear or washi tape)

  • Stickers

  • Pen

  • Markers

  • Literally anything else you want to put in

Cut out pictures from magazines and glue them on a paper or an empty notebook page. Add washi tape to frame it or write something of your own in pen, there are so many things you can do and so many things to create.
