My photojournalism piece communicates how even the simplest of things are different because of the coronavirus. What I like best about what I created is just how the photos came out in general. They really captured what I wanted to show on the impact of the coronavirus. A pattern that appears in my work is that I took a lot of photos of signs that were representative of the business closure and limited access. I believe those patterns show the more prominent affects this virus has had on communities. If I were to change something in my photojournal I would add more variety in the photos I took so I could show more of the ways the coronavirus has affected the world. What I hope viewers of this piece can see is how the normal things we see and do everyday that we don’t really give a second thought to are more important than we realize.

My claim for this project was that although people have to physically stay away from each other and might feel really lonely, the pandemic has also brought people together and made people help support and protect others. I chose to focus on this claim because I feel that it relates most to my experiences and surroundings. I decided I wanted to create a photo journal because I like taking pictures. I decided I wanted to take pictures of what was happening outside in the world because I thought that would be the best way to support my claim. I thought this would best support my claim because it was a way of showing what was happening in the community and in my environment in the way I wanted it too. I felt that showing a picture can really help people understand the meaning of my claim because it creates a visual and examples of it. Some of my pictures show ways people are forced to stay apart but some of my pictures also show how people have come together, also the support of the community in this hard time. My intention for the people viewing my art piece is that in all the bad, there still is some good. Even though it doesn’t make up for the bad, it is still something that will help people get through this.

My research showed that “Coronavirus has changed society by being something to constantly think about and to make us be more aware of our surroundings” and that “A pandemic affects people in ways like causing constant anxiety and stress.” This project reflects these claims because perception and feeling go hand in hand in the sense that our perceptions are the causes of our feelings. Not to mention, they exist with each other like these pictures and watercolor do.
Because of the current state, I was really unsure of what I wanted to create, I felt really unmotivated and detached from everything. So, I knew that whatever I made, I wanted it to be a reflection of my feelings. What I liked best about what I made was the fact that I didn’t put pressure on myself or a great deal of expectation for it, I just let myself go. My intention was to share my feelings in order to get people thinking about how events will look and feel different based on the person experiencing them.

With this piece I wanted to show the feelings of isolation that me and others share because Covid-19 and quarantine. Being in quarantine away from everyone except my parents is kind of making me go crazy so I wanted to portray how it feels and how it looks to be completely alone doing nothing. I hope that my work gives a little insight of what the world looks like right now for some.
I did a photoshoot with my cousin through FaceTime (second slide) and I’m so proud of how it turned out. In this shoot we decided what we wanted and I directed her where to place the phone and the lighting. I wish I had taken pictures of the streets at night because it would’ve been prettier, but I like how it shows the aloneness which is what my intentions were.

The theme topic for my photojournalism project is that corona virus has changed society by causing people to stay inside. I decided to do the photo journal because when the shut down first started I noticed all the empty and unused spaces in Cambridge. Take the basketball and tennis courts down the street from my house for example, there are locks on the gates so no one can get in and the city put bags on the hoops and took away the netting on the tennis court. Spring and summer are the times that the courts are the busiest, but now because of covid they just feel abandoned. And over the last two-ish months it feels like i’ve seen more signs saying to stya six feet apart than people.
The thing that I like best about my project is that photos can last a long time and actual documentation of what's happening right now could help to teach people in the future. If I could change it, the thing I would change is the medium. Because when I think about photos that teach people, I always think about physical photos . I want viewers to see that even though things are bad some things are still the same and things will get better.
