Through this piece of artwork, I hoped to convey the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on society and the lives of individuals during this time. From my research, I found that while people are social-distancing, many are also sewing masks for others who are at risk; this contrast demonstrates an inspiring message that even when we are apart, people prioritize helping others. To illustrate this connection, I decided to use a map of the world with representations of people who were far apart with lines connecting them . My favorite element of the piece is the icons that show the different activities and experiences of people because, I was able to include parts of my own experience, concerns that I discussed with people I interviewed, and activities recommended by experts in the article, “5 Ways the Coronavirus Is Changing Everyday Life” from Everyday Health Newsletter. This piece is intended to communicate the message that despite the distance and hardship of this point in history, there is still hope and love to be shared.

My art shows how unpredictable and different all the aspects of our life and thinking are now that we are in quarantine. For example, we can’t be in a busy place such as Harvard Square or a hockey game, many of us have to think more carefully about having enough food and resources, the school environment has changed and so has the way we learn, and even our thoughts related to what we can do about the environment have changed. I’ve noticed that these events are causing us to think and act very differently in our daily lives. I wanted to show through this project how our whole world can change and has changed. The photos in my project show things that seemed normal before quarantine, and/or things that have changed since. Each image has something changed and colored in, demonstrating both physical adjustments to our lives and changes in thinking.
