Overview of the OLA Immersion Program

The OLA Program at King Open School is an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in schooling in two languages. Most scholars start kindergarten with little or no knowledge of Portuguese; some of them come from families who speak Portuguese at home; we even have scholars who speak a language other than English at home, and come to the program to acquire a third language.

Scholars learn how to speak conversational Portuguese, and they also acquire academic Portuguese through Portuguese language arts lessons as well as core subjects (math, science, social studies) taught in the target language. They are assessed yearly so that teachers can track their progress and adjust practice.
