Our Nihao program provides Mandarin learning opportunities to all students at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School from Grade K to 5. Our goal is to develop students' language proficiency and 21st-century skills by teaching the world language. What this means to our foreign language class is that we move away from the traditional textbook and translation, but focus more on the interpersonal communication and the intercultural competency.
We are dedicated to develop our Mandarin curriculum that reflects the 5Cs from the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century. The 5Cs include: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities.
In JK and K, the students learn basic vocabulary words and simple phrases through songs and games. We focus on listening and speaking skills in these topics:

Body parts
Weather

Clothing items
In Grade 1 and 2, the students start to learn about pinyin and the basic rules for character formation. They also begin to form simple phrases in a variety of topics:
Places and Weather
Food and culture
Clothing items and shopping
Time and activities
School life
Numbers and shapes
In Grade 4 and 5, the students continue to develop the speaking skills by applying what they have learned in various contexts They will also begin to read and write simple sentences through learning the most common characters. The topics include:

Health and Body parts
Extended family members and Relationships
Occupations and Dreams
Seasons and Clothing items
Time and Traveling

Lunar New Year is one of the most prominent and celebrated holidays in the world. It is not only celebrate in China, but also in Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korean and Singapore. Every year at MLK school, we celebrate the lunar new year by students performing traditions songs and dances. You will see many of us wear the color red because red is traditionally associated with good fortune, happiness and wealth. On this day, our students get to see the traditional lion dance which is performed to bring prosperity and good luck for the upcoming year!
